Swatted a CW that was resting on a calabrese leaf this morning, oh joy they have started!
I have mine netted already. After last year i am not taking chances!!! :-[
I watched one trying and failing to get through the netting onto my greens - but it's a big mesh, really to keep the pigeons off.
Later, I came by again and saw it had got through. d**n. But I can't bring myself to squash them! Squashing butterflies just feels bad and wrong, though I suppose it's no worse than swatting a fly, which I can do... I also can't squash snails, but I *can* chuck them in a pot of beer...
Squeamish I suppose. :s

ditto :)
and i have seen three cabbage flies in the last two weeks, the first one scared the crap out me :o
Spotted the first one of the year on my plot on Sunday afternoon. Get everything covered quickly!
:)please remember not all white butterflies are cabbage whites/ shades x
It's a bit of a giveaway if they're trying, trying, and trying to get through the netting to your brassicas. :D
But I *still* can't bring myself to squash them. :( Will have to re-net when I get back from visiting my gran.
This reluctance it totally at odds, by the way, with my discomfort at the 'scale of cuteness' which gauges which animals are considered edible. I.e. some people won't eat rabbit, or even duck, because they're fluffy... :S (Yet they'll eat chicken, and what could possibly be cuter than a chick? I don't get it!)
So I do realise I'm being hypocritical.

True, but with the exception of the extremely rare wood white, they will all eat cabbages.
