I have 25 tomato plants that are 18-24" tall (varieties: Shirley, Costello Guenovese, Moneymaker, Tumbler, San Marzan); and 5 Carmen cucumber plants about 8-10" tall in my conservatory. Would it be ok to put them in an unheated greenhouse?
Mine are only about 5 inches tall but already out in the uh greenhouse...........keep a roll of fleece at the ready just in case of a late one.
KT, mine are in my unheated greenhouse - and they're only at the seed leaf stage ;D Agree about the fleece for you - plastic covers for my little ones :( I'm dead jealous.
my toms went into the unheated greenhouse today and i also plan to fleece if a cold one comes along, but I'm only sowing my cucumbers this week in the conservatory as they like a little more molly cuddling and will probably move into the greenhouse about three to four weeks after germination.
Mine won't be going outside till the end of next month.
Snap! Yes - they will probably survive, with fleece if necessary, but they won't necessarily do better than those planted out later. Or so I would suggest. Nothing enjoys below 50F.
We have had a whole crop cut down by frost in early May.
I generally put mine out in a cold frame early to mid May to get them used to the outdoors. But they really don't like the check on growth as the nights can be a bit chilly. This year they are staying in the conservatory until June.............once I have persuaded my OH that they are decorative.
Managed to do it with the winter squash so should be okay, fingers crossed.
i've got 4 tomato plants on my bedroom windowsill that are taking over - they are already at the top of the window and have small fruits on them already?!? I know it's too early to put them outside yet (i don't have a green house or coldframe) what should i do?
:-\
It is done. I have put them all in the unheated greenhouse today. Potted them all on into individual pots. (I have put the parafin heater on tonight so as not too great a shock)
Well I planted my tomatoes in an unheated greenhouse in February and they are coming along fine.
When frost looked possible a little fleece over the top must have done the job because they were fine even though the water can had ice on top.
The cucumbers are more delicate so they got a place in side one of those mini greenhouse things which I have inside the greenhouse for my more exotic varieties.
One thing I always do, this time of year is to keep a water can in the greenhouse so that the sun (when we get it) heats it a degree or two, then I water in the evening.
Mine too have all been in an unheated greenhouse for about a month. I keep them in propagators with lids on at night and then remove the lids during the day to give them some extra light. I have suffered in the past growing them inside because they got very leggy - they seem to grow sturdier outside.
I must admit thought that I have some 'insurance' tomatoes / cucumbers that I keep in my heated propagator in the greenhouse so that I won't get wiped out completely!
Mine have been out in a mini greenhouse for a week, they're happy as larry and getting very tall.
