Title: Delphiniums
Post by: woodypecks on April 09, 2009, 18:30:01
Today I planted out some Delphiniums which I grew from seed . It has taken three years to get them to a decent size to plant out . I,ve pushed in some twigs for support and put down slug pellets ........If you grow delphiniums ,can you tell me what looks good with them ?  Debbie     :)

I think they look great in any company... watch those slimies though...
I find they don't like aconitums as much... being highly poisonous...  :-\

I agree - I love them a lot. A farm / nursery nearby has a beautiful garden packed with them and it looks really stunning!

I also have a terrific slug problem and struggle to keep them off of the Delphiniums - copper rings seem to have worked so far! I actually grow loads of aconitums as they are quite similar in appearance and, as woodypecks mentioned, the slugs don't go near them :)

I've not grown delphiniums before this year. I sowed a couple of varieties two weeks ago and they're only just starting to poke their heads up today, I'd almost given up hope. Any tips about growing them on would be appreciated. It sounds like a long job!

What colour are the Delphiniums ? White, Light blue, Dark Blue, Mauve?
How tall are they, waist or head high?

How about Aquilegas, blue geraniums, or Campanula ?

Out of a whole packet of seeds 4 grew last year and only 3 survived the winter. I'll be interested to hear recommended companions since monarda  and zinnias did NOT look good with them.

How about Dahlias, Foxgloves, Verbascum. I love Monarda, what a shame they did not look good.

Thanks for all your ideas ! You,ve got me thinking about those gorgeous Monkshood Aconites and Monardas....I,ve never grown them ,I,ll be looking out for them now . My delphiniums are hopefully the tall ones   they put up a few very small spires of blue flowers last year .I hope they,ll do better this year .
