Til this morning I had 16 healthy two leafed melon seedlings in the greenhouse, now I have just one, the rest have had their leaves eaten overnight, leaving just tiny stumps behind. I believe I found the culprit, a snail hiding under the seed tray looking sheepish. He's a goner now but do you think the seedlings will recover, or should I start a new batch?

I would start another batch as the celery seedlings that a slug ate in my greenhouse did not grow again, yes the slug did enjoy it's last meal.
one snail, 16 seedlings!! You dont have mice do you? Plant up more and keep em covered if possible.

Ahh well...live and learn. I will have to check for more snails though as 15 in a night seemed a lot for one diner. Thanks.
It's amazing what they get through. They won't regrow once the seed leaves are gone. The one exception I've found to the rule was some Trilliums which got eaten off last year. They lasted a couple of weeks before getting the chop, but this year, not only have a lot more seeds in both batches germinated, but there are bigger and stronger-looking seedlings which can only be the original ones popped up again!
Water in the greenhouse and then go out with a torch about an hour after dark that should have brought them out into the open... :-\
