Title: When can I have my window sill back?
Post by: starting out on April 08, 2009, 12:12:29
Hi

I am new to this forum and to the whole growing your own community so im trying to learn everything at the moment.

I have lots of trays with seedlings growing and need to reclaim my windowsills for more sowing. I have a mini plastic greenhouse in the garden secured so it wont fly away and in that I have carrots and parsnips which I have started early and some other things which I cant actually remember off hand. Its full anyway. I also have a polytunnel on my allotment which is empty at the moment. What I was wondering is can I put the seedlings in there now or is it too cold. It isnt heated at all. I have peppers and chillies which are doing great and are probably between 2 and 3 inches high now. I also have cucumber, cabbage and butternut squash which have also grown great and are 2inches high in about a week. I also have tomatoes which are still very small, around an inch tall.  If I am able to put these in the tunnel can I just transfer them direct or will I need to put them outside and then bring them in overnight first.

Any tips greatly appreciated as I am really just starting from scratch.

Welcome to A4A...
You can put them into the poly now, but cover with fleece... keeps the temp even. Try to raise them off the ground to discourage slugs.  :)

I'd keep the tender veg inside for a couple of weeks yet, and put anything hardy in the polytunnel.

Thank you for the prompt replys.  have a shelf in the tunnel so I can keep them off the ground no problem.

What would you say were the hardy ones and which are the tender ones. I assume I should keep the tomatoes here for the time being.

Have a look at the minimum temps on somewhere like metcheck... if they aren't predicting below 5c then I'd take the toms as well...  :-\

Thanks again. Thats a handy site. I have checked and it seems we are going below 5 for a few nights over the next couple of weeks so looks like I had better keep the tomatoes inside. Would all the rest be ok to go or not?

Cabbage yes, squash and cucumbers definitely not. Chilli and peppers with the toms.

Thank you. I was going to look into whether or not I can plant the cabbages out into their final place now or not. I have been doing lots of reading buts its taking it all in thats the problem. Theres so much to learn :)

Ill repot the cucumber into their own pots and put them on the sill upstairs along with the peppers which are doing well. Ill keep the seedlings downstairs so I an keep a better eye on them and then sow some more tomatoes now.

Hiya, startingout, welcome to a4a  ;D
I've just planted up 2 of my toms in the polytunnel but they were huge, the rest, plus the peppers are staying at home..I've planted out some of our cabbages, greyhound for e.g, the rest are outside on shelves, hope this helps  :)
what have you got your carrots and parsnips in in the greenhouse ?

Yes thats a great help. I have the carrots and parsnips in newspaper pots in the mini greenhouse. Ill repot the cabbage and cucumber and then leave them indoors until the low temperatures are done with. Ill have to learn to be patient :)

cabbage aren't worried about the temp, but will be happier if bigger when put out..  :)
