Title: frisby lettuce?
Post by: ciderself on April 07, 2009, 18:29:17

About a couple of years ago I bought some very cheap lettuce seeds called Frisby ( I think it was from Lidl)  and it grew wonderfully on my plot. It didn't bolt in the hot weather, was really crisp and tasty and lasted for ages in the fridge but I haven't been able to find it again. Does anyone know where I can get the seeds from please?

Frisby lettuce seeds are produced by a company named Nickerson so if you do a 'google' you may be able to locate them.

Thanks Tee Gee
However do you know all these things? I have searched for ages on the internet, trawling all the usual seed merchants without success. I see frisby did have an AGM award in 1995 -- well that only seems like a blink away.
I have sent an email to their headquarters in Lincolnshire asking for seed companies which may sell them but I don't hold out much hope and they only sell to the professional market.

It does happen that varieties come and go.

Seed producing must be similar to other manufacturing, a small company is bought out by a larger one and they cut out lines.

Perhaps the land is sold to a developer and the sole producer just retires on the profit.

Hope you find an alternative you like.

Heritage Seed Library, at HDRA (Grow Organic now) at Ryton near Coventry. To stay "available" seeds have to be registered, at a cost, and many varieties drop off the national list... they preserve the varieties. There are similar organisations in other countries...  :-X

Yes you're right. Just heard back from Nickerson:-

"Frisby  is our variety but now discontinued. Nearest to it is Fristina - curly leaf green lettuce."

Just because its new doesn't mean to say its better though.
