With the show nearly over (voting now for the finals of potatoes, dahlias, red tomatoes and runners), we can start to look forward to the Autumn Show. Entries for this show should be photographed in the months of September, October & November, with pictures to be posted by December 10th (maybe posting of pictures should commence beginning of December?). The polls should be up by the 11th. I hope that there will be many entries! but this may involve having a second round of voting.
Cup competition - one for flowers and one for vegetables&fruit.
Rules: There should be no more than one entry per person per class. If possible, entries should include a scale (such as a ruler/coin) and state (where possible) the variety. Further information on growing may be included. (Suggestions welcome)
Classes - http://www.btinternet.com/~miagriffiths/autumnshowclasses.html please let me know what other classes should be included. Maybe a silly idea - how about a compost one - take a picture of your compost, or for those who have one, the garden/allotment shed!
Hi Multi - I have two autumn flowering plants/shrubs which have not been included in your list 'Sedum' and 'Pyracantha'
Pat
Multi how about having an others section? For those fruit n veg not listed?
Beans -other (or beans -borlotti), or even better beans borlotti grown by derbex -might stand a chance with that one ;D
Tomatillos? I know a few are growing them this year and maybe more next.
Parsnips?
Jeremy
Although a rule is a useful comparison, voters should not always look for the biggest. For instance, mini-cus? And the longest runner bean is probably inedible?
Should there be a set number of items in an exhibit - like in 'real life'?
Another complication!! = Tim
How about messiest shed? I think I'd be a contender for that (and a good excuse not to tidy it up!)
And I like the idea of compost - it's been my best crop this year!
Have thought about set number of exhibits, but, as this is just for fun! reckon we don't need to be so strict. I would say, eg. for beans - a meal's worth for 2-4 people, etc.
Updating after I post this!
Just another thought.
Most people put in max size photos.
1. It took ages to scroll through the collection.
2. Bigger photos can influence voters.
Would smaller pics take less time? And would a size limit be fairer? = Tim
Good idea Tim on the photo size.
Ina, over in thoughts for next year on the A4A show board, suggested an exhibition in September - without polls. We could then get ideas for what we want from the seed catalogues due out end of September/beginning October (though probably not got the money or space for everything!)
I still like the idea of polls & competition, though I can envisage that it would take upto half a day or so to do the polls for the autumn show classes I have suggested. If we go for the exhibition way - then we could have a few polls for - best overall flower/fruit/veg gardener
Can one of us help you set up the polls MV? It must have taken you ages to sort out!
What a good idea Doris - MV could delegate so many to a few willing helpers to ease the load :)
