Title: creeping buttercup?
Post by: gardentg44 on April 04, 2009, 08:05:53
creeping butter cups are becoming a nightmare in my lottie.

mostly around the edges where its damp which i spray with roundup,

the biggest problem is they have took over the strawberry bed ,

How do i get them out ,without lifting the whole bed and re planting? ???

I think it might be down to a bit of hard graft with a small fork unfortunately - seems to work for me, although my veg patch is probably considerably smaller than yours!

I find they die pretty quickly if dug out and left in the sun for a couple of days - I chuck them onto the compost heap (unlike ground elder which seems to be able to regenerate from the tiniest, driest piece of root...)

I have the same problem. AsI get on top of the bindweed (sort of) , the buttercup takes over-I wonder if there's a connection?

The bindweed probably keep the buttercups down by shading them Caroline... they like sun as well as damp...  :)

I'm in the camp of a loooong session with a 2-pronged hand-tool & painstaking work to follow up all the runners & lift them. Worth it, tho, long-term. 8)

I get the same trouble at work in that they get under the hardy geraniums.  Can you imagine trying to pick them out of that.  The only real way to get rid of them is unfortunately the long way around.  Dig it all up and start again.  My opinion and experience only.

Yep - digging them up seems to be  the most effective way of doing them in.  I too have them entwined with my strawberries - a bit of effort early in the season saves a lot of disturbance later on.  I'm amazed though, when 2 leaves pop up above ground, how much plant, and leaves there is below the surface - little sods.

Dig them up and don't let them flower whatever you do. I've been trying to get rid of mine for years.
