Post by: staris on April 03, 2009, 20:23:34
i planted garlic about november last year and it's been growing very well up untill now the leaves are going yellow and it looks like it's starting to die off ,is this normal or does it need feeding  :)

It could be rust or another bug

Garlic are resilient to almost everything and the bulb usually continues to grow even if the tops look offish.

Leave it and wait and see because I think you will still get useful bulbs.

Been a long time since i grew Garlic but yellowing of the leaves some times indicates its ready for harvesting so check the bulbs.

Mine are also yellow - even the ones I planted a few weeks ago, which I dont think are ready for harvesting!

My overwintering onions are also going yellow/dead at the ends of the leaves, and have hardly grown at all. Strangely they look worse having fed them last week!

It's quite normal for the older leaves to yellow and die off. Usually the tips start to yellow first. If the newest leaves emerging from the top look healthy I would have thought all is well. No way will the garlic be ready to harvest yet though.

With problems of this nature a photo would help us a lot.

The outer leaves on mine are yellowing at the tips but the middle leaves are nice a green.  I had a "firkle" and the bulbs are about the size of a large spring onion so on target for a June harvest.

I agree with Eristic!

I fed mine a high nitrogen fertiliser this week ( Nitro Chalk) although Sulphate of ammonia would do.

I don't think there is anything to worry about. They look normal to me but could maybe do with some feeding.

The leaves that are dieing off are the oldest and are being replaced by much larger new leaves.
