My FIL is in hospital at the moment and will be unable to taste my rhubarb for a few months, how i can preserve it so i can cook up a crumble at a later date?
Freeze it! Just cut in into chunks and blanch for a minute or so then pack into plastic bags and freeze. You don't even need to blanch if you're going to use it within a few months.
Lovely to have crumbles out of season :)
Thank you Chrissie, at the moment my FIL is on liquids only with no bits, but eventually he will be on solid food again and i would love him to have my crumble xxx Thank you xx
Might be a silly question about rhubarb but picked some yesterday and is it better to cut it or pull it. Thought you had to pull it but nearly pulled up the whole plant, so if I cut it will it hurt the plant. This is only the second year so not really all that well established.
Harvest rhubarb by twisting and pulling. If it don't come off, it aint ready.
Cutting can introduce diseases.
Rhubarb should be available for a good few months yet, it has only just started so your loved one should be able to get some freshly picked when they are ready to enjoy.
I think you could ask if they are allowed rhubarb juice. If so,
You could then just take them the syrup from the stewed rhubarb as a taste.
Hope your FIL makes a speedy recovery - he should do with all that lovely fruit to look forward to!
