Title: raised beds
Post by: woody on March 29, 2009, 11:51:11
Hi all,
made some 12 inch high raised beds yesterday, and they are going on a shabby  grassy area, do i need to cover the grass with weed surpress or can i just tip soil on, i would have though 12 inches of soil would block out the light for it to grow, wishful thinking no doubt
heres a few pics

not sure if you are finished but you could put cardboard or a couple layers of newspaper which will help with water retension.

They look great. I would be paranoid about people stealing all my veg though with stuff growing in the front garden.

Just a thought Woody. How will you cut the hedge when the beds are full of veg.

Hi Woody - what a great use of space, I see so many front gardens that aren't up to much, so I appreciate your attitude to this!

Hi Guys,
we live in a small close well crescent, nobody can walk past as its a dead end, thats why i done it, its very very quiet, i've had a tom and barb moment, not forgetting the polytunnel in the back garden and two chickens ;D
Just love it, all my seeds are in.... i run Fire foods so i grow a lot of chilli peppers, if anybody needs any advice or seeds just let me know.

as for the hedge errrrmmmmm........i'll make do...

I have a friend in Pudsey who has grown, and still grows food, in his front garden in raised beds...  the only problem is kids kicking footballs into the garden..  :-\

I will be, but how nice just to pop out with a brew for a 20 min weed ;) i would never do this on a street its only because we have no passers by, and surrounded by the older generation. No kids for miles.....we are so tucked away only close neighbours know whats going on.
One of the problems i had when i had a plot was driving there-filling the car with bits and bobs, not thats it was a major problem, but its just easier now, as somebody once said perfik

They are big old beds i've gone through 3 big bags of top soil and 2 composters and i think i need another 3-4 big bags of top soil, still once its done its done.
