Make sure you get rid of all the weeds - especially couch grass - before planting.  It's painful and difficult - nearly impossible, in fact - to get rid of weeds when they're tangled up in the roots near the centre of the gooseberry bush.

I've just planted two in an only quickly dug and weeded bed :( - I was in a hurry as they arrived unexpectedly and had already been kept damp and wrapped up for two days. There weren't any big obvious couch grass rhizomes but I'm sure there are bound to have been some small ones because I had to go so fast... oh well - will just have to wait and see how bad it is and pull out all the small bits of weed I see as quickly as I can! The bushes themselves are tiny at the moment, at least, so I should be able to get fairly close.
