Have grown Asparagus in pots for three years and finaly decided to pick them tonight on advise from some of you guys on the site.
There weren't too many of them about ten but they were the best asparagus we've ever tasted well worth teh effort of growing
Now not sure what to do with the pots, whether to plant in theallotment or keep in the pots
What size pots did you grow them in and in what?
About twelve inch pots with standard john innes (i think) as it was three years ago
I grew asparagus from seed last year and transplanted it into 3" pots.It came
up again this year, about as thick as a matchstick. I intend to plant it out into a raised bed as soon as I've built one!
Weed-Digga
It would probably be better planted out. Mine hasn't emerged through the mulch yet, but it was looking good last year.
Just noticed my asparagus coming through
I bought mine off ebay for £10 in august 2007 for about 12 2yr old crowns
Last year they came up (what a relief, the stuff the year before just rotted) but got some kind of asparagus bug on it.
I sprayed it once (I hate using chemicals) and I left to build reserves. Today I noticed the first shoot and I've blogged on it on my allotment blog (pics on www.waark.com) - it's quite big - at least the size of a supermarket tip if not fatter... but strangely purple!
My well-established bed has spears appearing - the earliest we've ever had them. Looking forward to the season :P :P :P :P :P :P
Dont' worry about the purple tinge, amny varieties have it when they first come up... ;D
