Title: Plant out or not ?
Post by: Dadnlad on March 27, 2009, 09:12:51
We've got 3 trays of broadies in rootrainers in the unheated g/h, about 3-4'' tall and ready to go ;D

Me and the head gardener ::) planned to plant them out Sat, but have just seen the local forcast is for frosty nights for best part of a week, and as our plots are in a frost pocket, we're gonna cop it for sure

I know broadies are pretty hardy things, but does a fortnight in an unheated g/h count as hardening off ?

Should we go for planting out and fleecing, or keep back for another week ? :-\

A1 not unless you been opening the door every day (all day, close at night)

A2 see answer 1 ;)

I would either plant out and fleece - making sure the wet fleece wont break the tips of the broadies or put the seed tray outside somewhere a little sheltered for a week or so, probably the latter for me.

given the frost warnings / need for more hardening off I'd leave it a few more days if you can.

I think you have answered your own question/s

I would say; " if in doubt do nowt" and leave it until you feel more comfortable about doing it!

keep them where they are. Another week wont hurt until you plant them out.

Excellent rule of thumb and one which most of us have had to learn the hard way  :)
