Title: To many potatoes.
Post by: grannyjanny on March 25, 2009, 18:20:49
We will have a 6'x18' potato bed & I've got a bit carried away (as you do). 36 ulster sceptre, 20 swift, 10 vivaldi, 10 hunter & 5 pink fir apple. We have some new lads who got their plot last week so I will give them some. Can the swift be planted closer than the traditional 12". I will plant the PFA at home. If we plant them deeper than the books say would they still need earthing up? Will we get 4 row or 3 rows in that size bed.

At a foot each way you can get them all, except the PFA into that space... You will get lower than max yields but still worthwhile. I wouldn't even try to earth up but keep burying them with grasscuttings and anything else you can get your hands on...   :)

Thanks SD. OH wants to do it by the book this year but I think I will cram some in at home just to compare yields.

How about trying some in bags or buckets, then they can be placed anywhere there is room and the main bed will be spaced correctly.
