Planted my carrots and parsnips outside on 15th March, covered in fleece due to unpredictable weather, no signs of life as yet, when should i expect to be seeing a little something??
Carrots are slow germinators..They can take up to 3 weeks, similar with parsnips .
we put our carrots in on the 10th, they're just poking their heads up ;D
Thanks guys, will try be more patient, have also put a few seeds in pots on window ledge and this morning some parsnip seeds on wet kitchen paper in the airing cupboard, will see which works best
I planted courgette seeds (Friulana and Romanesco) in my lean-to over a month ago. No sign of germination yet; are they dead? :-[
I did tip one out to see what was happening; the seed is still there, not rotted away, just looking a little gloomy...
I've now put the pots in plastic bags, might this help?
I'd bring them into the house until they put their heads up Helen... :-\

I don't disagree with this statement other than to say; it also depends upon the soil temperature, which I would have thought would be quite cool at the moment.
So do not be surprised if it takes longer.
my carrots are now just starting to show - they went in under a plastic cloche on 21st Feb :) :)
I'm in two minds about bringing things indoors - the (unheated, largely glazed) lean-to gets much warmer than the house, when the sun shines - it's a rather dark house. But at night, it's colder out there. So it's a question of whether the seeds need higher maxiumum temperatures, which they'll get in the lean-to, or higher *average* temperatures, which they'll get in the house.
I guess it's time for another experiment - bring some in and see what happens!
Parnips are very slow germinaters and can take up to 28 days as TG says if the soil is cold. ;D ;D ;D
My tip to impatient gardeners is to put 4 or five seeds in a labled, tiny pot on a cool window sill from each pack you plant.
When they come through, you will know to start looking for them outside a few days later.
I spoke a day too soon, haha! One courgette has now put up a seedling. :)
My first indoor reared carrot popped his/her head out of the pot yesterday, looks like a very skinny blade of grass now
