Title: Rhubarb!
Post by: PJW_Letchworth on March 22, 2009, 21:45:11
I pulled the first rhubarb yesterday, some sticks were a good inch thick.  None of the plants have been forced.  Cooked it with a little fresh ginger and am eating it now with greek yogurt and toasted oats, delicious.  :D

Has anyone else had rhubarb this early without forcing?

We found rhubarb growing in a sort of covered bed on our new alottment - Deep joy! There are several crowns but only tiny bits of growth so far, it looks like it hasn't been touched for years, should I be doing anything with it?

I pulled some unforced rhubarb today - good thick stems too.  It had a rest year last year after being lifted and divided.  It was lovely - don't like the forced stuff as much.

My rhubarb seems healthy enough but I am waiting a little longer to harvest it.  My brother-in-law gave me loads yesterday from his rhubarb patch.  He gets tons.  Just can't harvest it fast enough.

I was just about to post for rhubarb recipes but decided to check the archives first. This rhubarb recipe page is worth a look:

Have been picking forced for last ten days or so and started the unforced about a week ago.  No idea what variety as I inherited it, but it must be an early one.

Any idea what variety it is? Some mature earlier than others, as ceres says. I have some called "Champagne" (I think!) which is ready to pull and has not been forced, but older plants that I inherited with my allotment and have since split up still have some way to go.

I have an early variety called "Timperley Early".  It is just about ready now and has not been forced.  The rest of my rhubarb is still gaining its leaf growth for this season, probably 6-8 weeks away from harvesting yet.

We discovered yesterday that have rhubarb ready to pull at our lottie but as we were out yesterday & will be eating at different times until later in the week, We've left it for now, but looking forward to fresh crumble next weekend.  No idea of variety, but we have just bought roots of Champagne, Timperley Early and Rasberry Red(?) for the rhubabrb bed extension so we will be doing a taste test later in the season to see if we can work out what we have - there are at least two different varieties there 1) Roger's rhubabrb from Sheffield and 2) mum's rhubarb from Innerleithen!

I grew rhubarb at home last year (from one year old crowns) and this year moved it to my allotment, can I still eat it as it is it's second year or not as it had a  move??
