Title: Can you help ID this ?
Post by: Flunky on March 22, 2009, 15:28:53
On the field next to our plot there is a bird that makes a sound which I can only describe as sounding "electronic" alomst like a metal detector. I have tried to see it but never seem to get close enough.

What would suggest it is ?

My first thought was magpie but doesnt sound right. On a site I found a Lapwing. Which sounds very alike but it says they are more common Oop North.

The lapwing makes a sound like "peee whit" and they will usually be in flocks. If they are nesting in the grass you would need to be an expert like me to find the nests, but walking the field should put them to flight.

Unless it's a starling - they make all sorts of strange whistles, and imitate other noises. What does the tone do? Rise, or fall, or rise then fall (etc) ?

As opposed to the 5 toed fen-ite bird  :P

Thanks for the replies. I am convinced it is a lapwing. I saw it fly and it did look black and white and was quite large. The bird song I listened to did sound the same. thanks again.
