Hi all,
Well it's that time of year when an expat stranded in the deserts of Qatar seriously misses his allotment back home. The sense of excitement in all your posts really comes across as the new growing season arrives.
I can't tell you how much I hanker after those early mornings and balmy evenings on my lottie at the Headstone Lane site in Harrow. In fact I can safely say I miss my plot more than just about anything else in England.
For the third year running I have a fabulous crop of cherry tomatoes growing up the front wall of the villa. I haven't grown much else this year...work in the news business has taken up all of my time. War in Gaza and economic meltdowns don't leave much time for irrigating the desert and growing lots of lovely veg.
On the upside I'll be spending the weekend camping on a wild beach up in the north of the country. A big bag of my tomatoes will be coming with me.
Best of luck with all your adventures on the allotment this summer. One day in the not too distant future I'll be getting my tools out of storage. Then, I'll be looking for a corner of a field that will be forerver England, to grow my green goodies in.
Stork.
Have a great weekend... our toms aren't quite ready here... ::)
its tough working away from home and it is odd what we end up missing most. At least you have some toms to keep you in practice for your return!!
have to post us some.... :D
I had some too. Mine you mine were last years made into a spaghetti sauce and frozen.
When I was overseas the thing I missed the most was Marmite! :-X Now we are back I hardly ever eat it! :D
Enjoy your toms, we have a long way to go over here till we are picking our own!
Home-grown tomatoes and sun-ripened fruit. Bliss!
An what's this about "balmy evenings" then? Last year it was more barmy than balmy :-\
Things I missed....cold-water fish, especially kippers - real kippers with heads and tails and an eye staring up at you from the plate ::)
Have a wonderful weekend, Stork, and while you're there envying us, some of us are here envying you ;D
Hi Stork good to hear from you, could you send a bit of Sun 8) this way, its cold and windy at the moment mind you we have had twelve days of mild weather and a good bit of Sun. 8) ;D ;D ;D
Thanks for all the replies. I'm heading to the U.K. over Easter so maybe I'll get a reality check on that "balmy'' weather I remember so fondly.
