Title: Weed control fabric - recommendations?
Post by: lewic on March 14, 2009, 19:12:39
I bought some cheap weed control fabric on Ebay to use as a path between beds, and it has turned out to be rather rubbish.. 'weed cultivation fabric' would be more accurate.

Have stuffed some bin bags under the fabric for the time being, but this isnt practical for large areas.

Can anyone recommend some good stuff which isnt too expensive? I want to be able to grow things through it. Mypex looks good but is pricey. B&Q's looks suspiciously like the Ebay fabric!

I thought that was probably the case, will have to save up.

Tried some from a pound shop last week that was so thin I would have had no problem driving with it over my head!

That Mypex stuff looks like the stuff I got last year(don't know what it was called as the ticket was chewed up on the polythene wrapper)cost me £83 for a 2mtr x 100mtr roll from our Allotment society (http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm265/Buster1954/Allotment/55.jpg)
only prob its woven and frays,so I use a hot knife to cut it now.
lewic your pic looks a little strange is that soil on top of the fabric ????

I got some great stuff in Wickes 12m for less than £5. Its woven and thick with green lines on it (just in case you decide to take a look as the thin rubbish stuff is plain black) I think its just called Heavy Duty Weed Suppessing Membrane

I am really impressed with it and its easy to cut too

Edited to say that it looks a lot like the stuff in Buster's  post above!

The fabric was pulled back for the photo, to show the weeds growing underneath. Was laid flat before, and held down with tent pegs.

I'll check out Wickes and Gardman fabric, sounds like its the thick woven stuff I need!

The cheaper the membrane, the thinner the fabric, even mypex comes in different grades. expect to pay about£40 +vat for 100m2

If it is for under  paths get the gravel drive membrane, it will last for years.
