i sowed some cabbage seeds on the 1st of March and not one has germinated as yet.
how long does it normally take cabbage seeds to germinate? my experience with other brassicus is a much quicker germination rate like 3 to 7 days approx.
should i resow ???
I would say that cabbage come up quite quickly.
Mine came up outside with no protection within about a week.
Maybe you should try another batch to be on the safe side..
It does seem a long time for brassicas - perhaps the seed is duff? Try again, and if it takes ages the second time try getting new seed. :-\ :-\ :-\
thanks guys i thought so so i'll resow some more today and hope for the best :)
Hi, could just be the weather at the moment. I sowed some savoy on the 3rd of this month and a couple are only just poking through, and this was in a potting shed. Have a little poke around and see if they are just under the soil.
Sorry you mentioned this.
I mostly sow indoors in modules. This year I wanted to get a move on & put them on heat. Checked the table I posted a while back - 5 days for Brassica. Believed it.
Big mistake!! Only checked today. They wer covered & they are 3cm high/long. And one tray was on top of the other! *****
Oh, well - plenty of time yet.
yes it is very strange i sowed them in a cold greenhouse and nada i did check the seeds early this week and again today there was no sings of rot the seeds looked fine ???.
the turnips, pak choi and mizuna were sowed on the 2nd of March and started coming up since the 6th :-\.
anyway i have resowed them now and live in hope.
My Primo cabbage and 2 varieties of broccoli have all germinated. My leeks ain't showing at all.
Cabbage can be up to 12 days but it depends if you are sowing with heat mine were thro in 4 days.
How did you start them off i do mine in a seed tray then cover them with a sheet of glass and news papaer on top to exclude any light.
i started mine in my unheated greenhouse.
I have never understood the (brown) paper cover.
If to exclude light, black plastic is better.
But some seeds need light. So clear plastic sheet - no glass?
Or was the paper under the glass?
Confused!
from 17 days to 34 days depending on what you are growing.
Get them inside in the warm with the propergater lid on, should be anything up to ten days. ;D ;D ;D
like i said i resowed them on the 13th and there is a sign of at least one germinating this morning, fingers cross the others will follow. this time i germinated them inside the conservatory, i will transfer to the greenhouse when they are all up and got some leaves, thanks everyone for the advice. i have never had trouble before with brassicus bit i suppose there is a first time for everything.
