Title: just how old can this tiny frog be?
Post by: theothermarg on March 10, 2009, 16:06:29
just saw a tiny frog (app size of the top of my thumb) it is the other side of the house from the pond which has umteen large frogs spawning.so does anyone here know what a frog that size is doing out and about? surely it can't be this years as the spawn is just appearing but wouldn't it be too small for last years?
how fast do frogs grow? does anyone know out there? please tell if you do

Hi Marg

I've found several little frogs recently in a habitat pile we were tidying up, they were about the size of the one you describe - think they are last year's hatchings and they wouldn't be going near the pond as they're not yet old enough to pair up.  Hopefully they will keep themselves hidden, otherwise they'll be a tasty meal for a Blackbird!

I had a tiny one in the garden at the end of last summer and it jumped out from where I was working - unfortunately one of my hens was "helping" and frog was sadly an ex frog!

Thos will be a year old; they take several years to reach full size.

I'm really surprised how slow they grow tho I suppose thinking that it is summer when they leave the pond and that they lie low most of the winter they havn't had much time to eat a lot. and they'v had to dodge all those birds (including hens)
