I have been clearing out the biscuit tin and I am trying to be ruthless with old seeds. How long does Leek seed last?
My name is Katy and I hoard seeds...
::)
5-7 years under optimal conditions before the germination rate tails off...
:)
Just chuck a load in some pots and see what happens ::) ::)
Much easier to tip a little onto damp kitchen paper inside plastic bag and leave in a warm place for a few days. If it sprouts, you know it's worth sowing it properly.
Katy,
Should be fine, I store mine for three years if I have enough to plant. No probs.
;)
Thanks peeps, these are two years old so fingers x'd
Hello Katy I am a seed collector too. I am thinking of going to my plot and creating a seed bed just for all my old hoarded seeds and labelling them with the sell by date. I'll let you know what happens. Oh I love those biscuit tins stuff with vegetable potential.
Seeds just want to grow :) My next door neighbour on my allotment cleared his seeds out the other day. He had tomato seeds that said on the packet sow by date of between 1993 and 1999. I can't stand to throw out seeds so i put them on the window sill in compost and i got a surprise this morning all of them have germinated ;D I don't know what i am going to do with all though tomatoes but it just goes to show ;D
Hi Katy "plantcollector" welcome to A4A .. :)
I sowed a load of leek seeds a while ago, some I bought in 2001. Nothing happened, so I sowed some more, now the new sowings and the old sowings have al germinated, so we'll be eating lots of leeks this year... and next.
