Post by: Lauren S on March 07, 2009, 21:28:32
Has anyone grown watermelons successfully outside in the UK?

If yes...which variety did you grow?

2007 -  Sugar Baby from seed - one plant in the g/h and one outside, both fruited, same size (ish), tasty, easily as  good as supermarket ;D
2008  -  Blacktail Mountain+Sugar Baby again from seed - buoyed by previous success went for 3 plants of each, 5 outside, all outside struggled with wet/cold and dead by midsummer, g/h plant succumbed to mildew late summer - no fruit :'(
2009 -  trying Blacktail Mountain again, fingers crossed for the weather ;)

Sugar baby outside in 2007 grew to football size and were delicious.
2008 = failure in cloches, outside and greenhouse.

Trying again this year with cloche and black soil membrane.
