here we go again!! 3 varieties, Gardeners delight, Marmande and Whippersnapper. all own saved seed. watered with seaweed solution in heated propagator, inside mini greenhouse, inside unheated greenhouse.
[attachment=1][attachment=2]
sown 28th feb
[attachment=3]
germinated 4th mar
have you started yet, Tim?
I haven't sown any tomatoes this year yet. I might sow some tomato, along with a more more varieties of chillies. I did sow a couple of seeds as an experiment in Nov in our conservatory. These are a dwarf bush variety. I just potted the best one up today and it's doing well. This was an experiment after seeing an article about sowing in Nov in a heated greenhouse.
I just had to Google for Whippersnapper Tomato ;D they look delish ;D
Me? Have you seen our last Electricity bill??
We now have only one room in the house where you don't need HWBs. The Kitchen with the AGA!!
Phew! Mine look about that size; was wondering if they were having problems. Feel better now. 8)
Ain't your AGA hooked up to your radiators??
see my post in 'top tips' for fuel economy in your AGA. (I'm assuming you got a solid fuel one?)
Sowed some Tamina, Tumbling Toms and Lidl today. They now reside in the airing cupboard until signs of life appear. I meant to sow some last month to see if they would 'catch up', but didn't get organised in time. Also sowed some saved chili and sweet peppers today and they're keeping the tomato seeds company. I bought some chili seed last year and got 8 seed in the packet, only four of which germinated. The plants grew to about six inches high and refused to grow any more? Then the Peach Potato Aphid appeared and I threw the plants out. Better luck this year ::)
pricked out 20 gardeners delight, 10 whippersnapper and 10 marmande into 2" pots, in mini greenhouse inside unheated greenhouse
[attachment=1]
Only just sowed mine at the weekend, Sungold, Shirley and Juliet which I have grown every year. This year I'm also trying Lemon Tree, Olivade and Principe Borghese
6 black cherry , 6 marmande,6 Roma, 6 moneypenny for the family as there always want them i prefer the other varities all in 4inch pots in the cold greenhouse doing well average day temp 13-14 degrees at the moment candle burning at night to take the edge off
Mine are still in their packets...... :-[

your very welcome, i think they will be better suited to a greenhouse enviro, i don't grow my toms in the greenhouse and was following the packets instructions on the ability to be grown outdoors and as i am in Kent i figured they would perform OK but the weather last year may have also affected their performance.
wishing you a bumper crop :).
todays update[attachment=1][attachment=2][attachment=3][attachment=4][attachment=5][attachment=6]
Your buckits don't look very big Tone. We use the asda ones and from your pics they are much bigger than yours. I dare'nt give them to ower Tone yet cos they would be drowned in the asda ones. My job is finished once I have done the babbying of em
they ain't buckits, shirl! I was potting them on from a 2" pot into a 3" pot ! ;)
Have lost half a dozen... to slugs from the 300+ we pricked out, they seem particularly fond of the Charlie Green... :-\
Excellent set of photos for potting on tonybloke, these are mine about ready for the same
(http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn164/Mowhay/toms.jpg)
Those were great pictures, Tonybloke. Really handy as I'd never thought to use the pot as a mould. Timely too as I'm potting mine on today. ;D
I`m getting fed up of the sight of them-hey ho only another two weeks and I can start offering them to new homes ;D

Heres my toms and other stuff
Helpful stuff.
Here's my start. Too leggy for 3 1/2" pots, I know, but they had a 'careless' start!
And I like to get a 'transportable' rootball before moving on.
The pots, BTW, were bought in 1975 when I thought that I might do Market Gardening.
todays update,planted at 7.30 this morning, 2 x Marmande, 2 x Korol Gigantov and 8 x Gardeners Delight.

;)
Blimey, yours are in already! :o
Mine are growing away well in 3 1/2" pots, but I'm nowhere near ready to put them in their final places t......haven't got the room in my greenhouse yet! ;D
And I've grown way too many as usual ::)....good job we have a plant sale at the Open Day.... ;D
Good job I looked at that last sentence before I posted it or we would be having a pant sale.... ;D
Put ours in at the allotment GH yesterday. 9 Shirley.
Saved me starting a new thread, Tony.
So far as I can see, even as large as yours are, no flowers?? Against all teaching.
But who does get flowers at the recommended 6-8" - & HOW??
The only time I've got flowers before planting up was when I ran out of greenhouse room and left some plants in 3 1/2 " pots....the grew tall and lanky then flowered, presumably due to stress! Does it make sense to stress plants into flowering before a final planting up?? I put mine out when the roots have filled the pot but before becoming potbound....always worked for me but not 'by the book'! ::)
QuoteGood job I looked at that last sentence before I posted it or we would be having a pant sale....
From DebP
That's one attraction I don't think we need on the day... :o
Always worked - yes, I get a good return, but does it not mean that the first truss sets lower - like Shirley - & that's more productive?
Otherwise, why do all references go on about it?
These are mine as yesterday; (http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd27/tgalmanac/April%202009/P1090558.jpg)
They were sown 26th Feb, pricked out 13th March and grown in good light at around 40°F.
All from own seed!
Varieties include Ailsa Craig, Vanessa from proprietory sources, and Feurta which I got from a tomato grown in Feurtaventura, Calahonda sourced the same way from Southern Spain. Tatton from a tasting tomato exhibition I visited at last years Tatton show............scraped the seed out before eating the sample....it tasted good so hopefully my ones will be equally as good.
V healthy, TG - but no flowers yet??
They have got flowers, but not open yet!! ( I'll take a close-up for you) ;)

Tony - never doubted you!! But why you & not me - ever??
CO2 - you won't be potting up yet will you - I doubt that the roots are half formed yet, so no gain.

Some of mine are still 2" high.
Feb Tim, But I still have some 2" high that we are growing for the kids and for my GH
I kept some seeds from a plant I had last year and its coming up great. I didn't plant it until a few weeks ago and its not as strong as the shop bought ones but this is staying on my window sill. It should produce small cherry tomatoes, can't remember the variety of it:

anyone any advice. dont have pics to put up unfortunately.
Mine are currently about 1ft tall. I am growing them in containers this year as opposed to in buckets with holes in the bottom. I have lined the greenhouse with plastic. With taking on a second plot it will be one less thing to weed whilst keeping the outside ground weed-free. ::) ::)

We are considering it MummyBunny...
If, like Tonybloke, they are on a windowsill the wall will provide a little extra heat at night.
Becca, how big are the plants? Are they still in the 3" pots you get them in? If so I'd suggest the compost has run out of nutrients and they are getting potbound nad starved... they will loose some leaves at that stage if not potted up into slightly larger pots and some fresh compost... :-\
those are just outside my back door, the brick shed is a good heatsink, I can fleece or bubblewrap if I need to at night. and I live less than a mile from the sea, so very few frosts in May. ( I also have some spare in the greenhouse if these get frosted heavily) ;)
Quotevariety's ildi are developing yellow n greying leaves. wonder is it mould. or early blight?

What type of compost have you used?
You may have a magnesium defficiency; http://www.thegardenersalmanac.co.uk/Data/Soil-Magnesium/Soil-Magnesium.htm (http://www.thegardenersalmanac.co.uk/Data/Soil-Magnesium/Soil-Magnesium.htm)
Quotealso have another plant which has developed speckling leaves ( faded n becoming slightly see through.

Have you warered them overhead?
Droplets of water can magnify the effects of the sun and burn/scorch the leaves.

they are in good compost mix.(cant remember the name) n they are about same height as shirlton's one's in pic above. (not good with measurements haha). I dont think they could be magnesium deficient as have a good compost with a plant boost mix added( had magnesium in it and also have some from home compost bin.. I grew them from seed, and have them transplanted into 9 inch pots.
i think the second illness could be due to water damage, they are on a shelf below plants and think there might be a constant dripping down on them in the greenhouse.
It was only the first mouldy leaves on the one plant that i was concerned about. - I had a full grown plant die on me towards end of last season due to blight.
the plant isnt in that soil ( its in pot) but I didnt change the soil in the greenhouse- should i have?
I so love your greenhouse Tim, I want to move in!
Remember that TG & others have 4 or more.
Anyway - bit by painful bit. Another 12 to go!
Hi Tim, I thought you usually cut your grow bags in half and went vertical?
how many tomatoes do you get out of there ??
Great Work :)
WOW - I have serious greenhouse envy (as well as shed envy....) now! V impressive toms too - was getting worried but glad to hear I'm not the only one with 2" toms! ;D
biggest ones, as of today ;D
Cuttting bags? Nothing 'usual' in this house! But getting too old for clever ideas.
Produce? I'm going to check this year. 79 plants.
Later - not my year. Damping off or other ailments? Never. Not me!
Just looked in the lean-to..................
Make that 78!!
:o
A lot of Tomatoes there Tim , Do you Eat /Sell Give them away ?
Are they all one type ??
Too old for idea ??? Never ;D
:D
Oh yes and Do let us know how many Pounds / Ok Killos Then you get out of the greenhouse :D
Progress?-over 200 sold but still plenty more in need of a home.
But I have now planted out a few for myself
Which have you kept for eating, Stephan??
That`s always the problem Tim-I only have room for about 25? plants.
It`s a balance between growing for next year`s seed and my personal favourites.
Black Russian is always there though as is Sweet Million, and since I found some `Blaby` hiding under the staging I`m keeping a couple.
I go on and on about Brandywine and Caspian Pink but the truth is-I have taken a year out to grow others-Oh well some suppliers rely on us buying new seed now and again?
Blimey Tim, what do you do with them all?!!! :o
Eat, share, freeze, sell.

Ginormous, Tony! Remind us how & when you sowed, & how grown on?
After always sowing my toms far too early as previously we didn't have a greenhouse, I sowed by toms really late this year. I think I actually left it too late. Mine are still tiny (only just beyond true leaf stage). Not good! I can't make my mind up to bear with these ones or to just go out and buy some plants. We have a greenhouse now and I was hoping to put the toms and cucumbers planted out in there next week. Yours look great Tony. I do actually have 1 dwarf cherry plant in flower that I planted back in November. Wanted to get a few more than that this year though!

Quote... and a solo sungold...
If only....
Hopefully soon.
It's weird; although my tomato plants were pretty late in being planted into their final positions, and were nearly all flowering when they were, 'Sweet Olive' is usually the first to fruit and ripen, but this year althought it had fruit first, 'Thai Pink Egg' looks as though it will win the race this year! Also doing well, HSL 'Orange Heart', 'Orange Banana' and 'Legend' have started to change colour slightly.... ;D
I'm trying something different this year, no sideshoots or leaves below the first truss, then letting them go, tying in the sideshoots as they grow. We shall see if I get a bigger yield this way!
Intresting Deb, i think you may get a bigger crop quantity wise, but i wonder if you will be down on size and wieght, wonder if this will affect the size of the seeds
Regardless, hope it works the way you want it

Anna is heart shaped with a definite point on the end and very flimsy looking plants though the tomatoes look like they'll be a hefty size. I tend to go by squeezing the tomato if it has a little give in it then its ripe. The colour tends to be a brownish when ripe

All my tomato varieties are poor this year. Plenty of green growth but hardly any fruit. I usually do OK but I will be lucky if my 15 plants have enough tomatoes on to make 2 plants worth combined at the moment

In doors or out KT
Indoors, unheated greenhouse. (Shirley, Roma, a beefsteak, Golden cherry tomato, moneymaker. and tumbling tom in hanging baskets for outdoors.)
:D I've had lots of quite large green toms in my unheated greenhouse for weeks, look how hot its been, they are still green,
outside my tumbling toms in hanging baskets were green yesterday, red today so don't lose heart KT / shades x

Finally mine are still green like me looking at these pictures.
Had a couple of Couer De Beouf ripen early (BER) but cut it out and ate the rest ... :)
Great picture Davyw1, making my mouth water. My tomatos are green but are going a paler green from bottom to top, is this a sign of gradual ripening or misplaced optimism?
this Korol Gigantov is starting to redden, and I reckon it'll be the largest tom I've ever grown.

todays harvest

a mix of 'marmande' 'korol gigantov' and 'gardeners delight'
Small, yes - but wait till you see the big one!!
Brandywine.
mine are all green still, and the ones outside seem to be doing been then the greenhouse ones. :'(
Not a great beauty. Had to pick it before its time becaue it was going soft.
Amish Paste.
In a Basil Salad last night.
PS But see Brandywine tonight. 1lb of Tomato.
It must be that time of the year but I`m already getting fed up with things to do with tomatoes.
I`ll regret saying that in a few months time I know :)
Try Chickens??
Process the glut for use in the winter, it will be here soon enough...
Thanks Tony... they arrived today... :)
Just been picking over the greenhouse... have about 3kg... :-X
I picked two blue box fulls this morning wieghed and baged them, sold 13lb in 10 minutes.
IO gre Black Krim this year and I'm well impressed with it. It's another one of these dark eastern-european beefsteaks adn you have to be on your toes about its ripeness as the fruits start out pale green, then go dark-green with brownish-purple coming through, and that's when they're ripe.... if you let them go dark red then they're over-ripe..... They look dreadful, flesh is brownish-green-purple (has to be seen to be appreciated really) but they taste pretty good and they taste ridiculously good baked or grilled. What really blew me away though is how early they are. I sowed four types of tomatos together back in March, the Krim, Gardeners delight, Alicante and San Marzano. THe GD managed about five fruits between them before the Krim started to ripen, we've been cropping both for a couple of weeks now and the first Alicante are just starting to ripen..... THis is in an unheated greenhouse in 14" pots, proably a bit crowded and limited to four trusses per plant. Dripper watering.
Some of the Krims are big sods adn one of those is just ripening now (I noticed this morning). I will try to get a photo over the weekend.
They do have all the beefsteak bad growth habits though, they fork, they gtrow blind into a leaf, they grow blind into a truss and they throuw some truly ugly kingfruit, but they taste good and they are the eearliest I've ever grown any beefsteak. I'll definitely have them in the GH again....

;D ;D-Welcome to the world of growing the more `unusual` types of tomatoes.
If you didn`t know it before you know now why it`s not always possible to give advice on tomato growing-some of the best tasting ones have so many `problems`that it`s a matter of discovery

Heh heh..... I think of them as being a tomato equivalent of Pink Fir Apple potatos..... you wouldn't gow that if it wasn't for the taste :-) .... That said one of the Krims forked, both sides grew blind into a truss, then one of the trusses threw a sideshoot which I ended up having to tie in as the leadshoot.... which explains why the main stem on that one turns into a truss for about a foot then turns back into stemj.....

A bit of bad timing 10 days to early for best truss

What are they like to grow
Like most beefsteaks... can get confused but less aggressive than say Giant Tree... :)

The reason for asking is i am not a lover of beefy toms, not because of the flavor because of they tend to go blind. I have a yelllow which is a great cropper the name i dont know, i got it 20 year ago and the grower who give me it had been growing it that long he had forgot the name. It did that well on the show bench we called "show yellow" hoping to put a stand of six in the village show tomorrow and some from that truss for a stand of red.
Good luck with "show yellow"... have you asked HSL about it... they may be able to identify it or if not find it a "Home" in the collection... :-\
I must invest in a better camara, hoping that this is going to spot on for the first monday in Sept
