Title: salad bowl lettuce
Post by: mummybunny on March 06, 2009, 10:23:51
Right so I've done the wrong thing again  ??? Planted my seeds thinly in a seed tray thought all was going good then was a bit worried as there about 2 cm long and are falling over!!

So had a look through the old posts and from what i have read they have gone leggy? Probably due to it being to warm? There is plenty of sunlight and have made sure there watered but not to damp and its in good quality seed compost!!

So my question is can i do anything to save them or am i going to have to start over? Trying to make sure i put them in a cooler place!

I did read about planting them out and a bit deeper than usual to help support them what are your thoughts please.

Thanks I'll get there some day  ;D

Assuming you didn't sow all the packet I'd be tempted to start them again...  :-\

In my modest experience, all lettuces hate being moved. I only sow them where they are to grow.

i have no trouble transplanting lettuce if i sowed them where i need them to grow the slugs will get them every time >:( :(

i agree with saddad and just start again, plus you could always stick the tray somewhere cooler as you said and harvest them in a few days as mini greens/ sprouts :-\.

Ah, then what you need is unwashed seaweed round the bed. I have NO slugs! (Fingers crossed)

yes i'm hoping to collect some this weekend but i'm not living close enough to get a regular supply for mulching purposes but will be collecting enough to brew hopefully a seasons worth of seaweed tea to use as a folia feed.

no worries Pixie was thinking the same thing and does it have to be collected wet? Have put the seed tray out side will see if it purks up!! then maybe plant a few in a spare pot to see what happens. Didnt use all the seeds so i can plant more  ;D

I'm a bit curious in what you intended doing with them once you had germinated them  ???

Whats on my mind is; did you just plan to leave them in the tray and grow them in this way?

Or did you plan to transplanting them into a greenhouse or tunnel?

I would say it is far too cold at the moment to plant them out doors, get back to us with your intentions then we will take it from there.

Meanwhile there are a few pictures and cultural info here to be going on with.

Hi Tee Gee the plan was to transplant them into a tunnel. The seed packet also states that you can plant outdoors in March so im a little confussed!
