Post by: Boomslang on March 05, 2009, 21:40:51
I live in Reading - there are no vacancies and over 600 people waiting for lotties - aren't councils obliged to provide? anyone know?
any ideas on how I get one?

may be if enough of you go and complain to the council they might do something about it. worth a try.

It could be that they have obliged by providing some plots.  I am not sure if they must provide for everybody who asks all the time.  What happens to the plots when allotments are not in fashion?  There may be something that requires so many plots per head of population but I am not sure.

Keep pestering.  Some of the 600 on lists move away,  change their mind, pop their clogs.  (Well you never know. ;D ;D)

They are legally obliged to provide allotments if over (?16) people ask... but the flaw in the legislation is there is no timescale for implementation...
So with 600 on the waiting list they have to provide them, but not while you are still alive...  ::)

Welcome to the site Boomslang...  :)

Are there any in villages near you? might be worth trying there... in towns they are often full and waiting lists. but i found the villages around the town often have spaces.

Try harassing your local councillors; they might get the idea there are votes in it!

Hi, how did you find out there were no vacancies?  If it was from the Council, they could be a bit out of date.  You could google for allotments in your area and if any of them have a website, make contact directly with them.  Or maybe some sites have an 'Open Gate' policy at the weekend so you could visit and find out what their waiting-list is like.

If you get your name on a waiting-list, it's a good idea to keep in contact with the Secretary and ask from time to time where you are on the list.

Hope this helps,
