Title: What do you get?
Post by: chelsea dagger on March 03, 2009, 21:00:49
We are very grateful that the council  in Milton Keynes have sites on many estates new and old.The fees are very reasonable, with have tapped water from April through to November, and if we are lucky the grass on the ridings are cut 3 times a year.We spent all last weekend cutting down trees and overgrown bushes around the car park, we did it ourselves because the parish council has no money in the budget for this maintenance. Any deliveries of manure or compost are paid fully by the members onsite. Are most council / private allotments across country the same as ours or do you get more for your money?

We have the hedges trimmed and grass cut when it gets long. There is water on site all year round included in the price. Nothing else is included. If we want it, we buy it. but rent is only £5 a year and were on 15 miles from you near Leighton Buzzard. I would like refuse collection from the site.

We have the same from our council and our rent is jut increasing to £22 this year.  We also have a nonprofit allotment shop run by volunteers.  Any money made is reinvested back into our site.  For example we had enough money for fencing 2 years ago.  I believe a large lockable gate is now being considered but god knows at what cost. If we did not have funds from the shop then there would be no money for the 3 skips we get throughout the year.   ;D ;D

Some councils offer free wood chippings to so could be worth enquiring.

ours costs about the same but the site has only 26 plots, so generating money is impossible on our site.

We have about 100 plots on our site and charge everybody £1 annual membership to allow them to purchase from our nursery and shop.  Any member of the public can also purchase the goods providing they pay the membership fee.  With 100 plots and over 500 members....  that's a lot of additional income - both from membership fees and shop sales.
