Do any other sites have a scarecrow competition? This year it will be our fifth one and it is very popular. I've put some photos on photobucket here http://s30.photobucket.com/albums/c333/Aragona/scarecrows/
We get someone from 'outside' to judge them and so far we've had the Police, our local Councillor (she said it was the highlight of her year!) and people from other allotments.
We also have a junior section to encourage the children to join in.
I usually stuff mine with straw but I wondered if anyone else had an alternative because I haven't got much straw this year.
We are intending to start one this year... ;D
Sounds like fun. Quite a few villages around North Yorkshire have scarecrow comps.
Maybe we could have one on here? ;D (Cue the comedians!)
Stuffing with waste shredded paper, ?
Have fun -- lovely for the kids,

I wonder how the paper would stand up to wet weather? Unless I dress
the scarecrow in waterproofs of course ;D

I make the head out of old tights, using the body part of the tights and stuffing it with the filling from an old pillow or cushion. Put a long stick up through the neck and then fasten another stick across for the arms (if you want a traditional type) Put a shirt on and stuff it with something (straw is good if you can get it) Then put one leg of the trousers on the end of the main stick and then stuff the legs. If you can get a boiler suit, they are the best because they don't come apart in the middle. If you want a sitting-down scarecrow you only need a short stick from the waist to the head.
I'm not sure if these instructions make sense, it's easier to do it than to write about it!
thanks
i get the idea of it now
i guess its just a case of playing around with it and seeing what works
:D :D
like this?

Thanks Floss :)
My grandsons are Luca and Joe, they were about 12 and 10 when they made it. I like the way the straw shows through the black tights!
Well done Luca and Joe, your scare crow is mega brilliant !
Does it survive in your grandads shed ?
