You've given me inpiration Tim!
My old James Grieve is riddled with canker but fruits for England.
Seriously thought about felling/digging root out & replacing.
Do you think it would be wise to plant in the same/or close to the original site if the ground  was well prepared?

Had you thought of cutting out the cankered wood and burning it? Or is it in the trunk? If you cut the branches back a few at a time over 3-4 winters, you could possibly rejuvenate the tree.

Robert,
It's riddled all over.

If it's that bad, get rid of it and plant another. All it'll do is spread infection. Don't plant in the same hole as they produce substances which will inhibit the growth of a new tree.
