Title: suggestions for pots
Post by: tomatoada on February 27, 2009, 18:20:35
What can I plant in my pots for a good display this coming Summer.?   Some ideas for the north side of the house and some for the south please.   Flowers that look good for as long as possible and look impressive.  Thanks.

If night scented Phlox do well north facing, will Phlox [  ordinary ? ]  do well too,

they also have lovely scent, Hostas don't mind shade - lovely foliage if different types

and they flower.      Exotic bulbs for your south facing  ---  loads to chose from eg .

lillies and monbretia, try Lucifer..   tall and bright red ...   lovely !

You will have more info when the ' peeps '  come in who know whats what !     ;D

That's why I tend to buy the small plug plants from the seed catalogues.  The seed is very expensive, and at least with the plugs (which don't work out much more expensive than seed) you have 100% germination.

P.S. Another suggestion I would make is to go to your local B&Q.  They currently have small plants of fuchsias, surfinia and million bells petunias, verbena, etc.  They are 10 plants for £6.00.  They are really good plants and have plenty of cutting material on them, so you can bulk up your stock. ;D ;D

Marigolds are great fillers and will last all summer if dead headed. The seeds are large so easy to plant for beginners.

Lobelia and alyssum will flower all summer too.

For taller flowers Aster, Cornflowers, Love in a mist.

Taller still Cosmos.

All easy to grow and the seeds are in Nettos at 19p a packet.

I agree petunias and lobelia are impressive. I love that waterfall of flowers look.

nasturtium lasts right up till late Autumn in milder areas. Make sure the soil isn't too good or it will be all leaves - though that's impressive in its own way!

oriental poppies? Big fat flowers in juicy colours.

Oh I can't wait for summer! ;D
