Title: CLAY SOIL AND CARROTS
Post by: mpdjulie on February 22, 2009, 21:55:56
I have a clay soil on a slightly sloping allotment.  Rain drains well enough.  I have read that I should grow short rooting carrots because the clay may prevent the carrot growing down.  Is this correct?  If so can anyone recommend a variety?
Thanks
:)

Carrots will grow on clay soil, as long as it has been worked and isn't just clay... the problem is getting them going as it will tend to cap... most main crops Autumn King and danvers half long do well for me...  :)

I incorporated sand into my clay soil last year and managed to grow some good sized carrots.  You don't need to confine yourself to the short stubby ones as long as the soil has been well worked and has a reasonable crumb structure.

Thanks.  I will try a little sand and autumn king.
Thanks again.
