Don't know if anyone can advise but OH informed me yesterday he has been offered some coppiced hazel prunings from a chap he works with and will be bringing me a car load!
Has anyone any advice on making hazel hurdles for edging my beds? If I stick the rods in the ground are they likey to sprout and "take"?
yes... but if you ring off the bark for the bit in the ground and to an inch or so above the ground it is less likely to root... :-X
Instructions for making hazel hurdles are on the BTCV site.

Very useful link, thanks Baccyman :)
Wow - that looks great Baccyman!
Will have to see what thickness and lenth it is when I get it. I was thinking of weaving low hurdles about a foot high to make a pretty edge to some of my plot beds. Will atch out for it sprouting though! Or maybe in a suitable coner I could deliberately set a couple with the hope of using them in years to come?
Thanks everyone! :)
put them in upside down! they seldom grow then. ;)
we use ours for pea sticks and bean canes ;D
Good idea Tony! Hope I can tell which way is which (!)
Manics - I have a mental picture of making one of those lovely woven wigwams for my beans, but even when I do wigwams with bamboo canes I always seem to end up with a wonky structure! Still - I suppose it will stand out from the crowd if I do one like the leaning tower of pisa! ;D
all our wigwams are wonky, makes for interest ;D
i doubt very much that hazel will root, willow or poplar certainly would but I have never known hazel pea or bean sticks to root, nor heard of them doing so.
Look for buds or leaf scars Pippy... to tell if they are upside down... :)
