I want to save my own parsnip seed but have dug them all up. Will it be ok to replant one now to flower and seed up or will I have to wait until the weather warms up. (It's ok we are trying to be more self sufficient where we can)
If you can dig the hole the soil is warm enough for parsnips! IE it isn't frozen solid. Parsnips will "revert" if cross pollinated... have you got a few roots of the same and can you net them... ???
Don't forget to put a substantial stake in to hold it up. Parsnip will grow about 6 ft tall and produce nore than a pint of seed each.

Clever plant. It knows germination is a bit "hit and miss". ;D

No wonder parsnip seed is so expensive the cost of a pint nowadays.
Makes you wonder why the likes of sesame and poppy seeds took off for eating...

Will I have to plant more than 1 root then Saddad
I haven't done parsnips but most things that cross easily need several plants to get pollination... :-\
The reason I ask is because alll my other parsnips are now sittin in the freezer. It's ok Tones just remembered that he still has some in sand.
That makes me wonder if one could buy a few parsnips, replant them, and have really fresh seed for the next season?
And didn't someone write somewhere in this forum that their parsnip flowered and scattered seed which germinated where it fell and they have been eating the results for months?
A chap on our site always transplants his self sown seedlings
