So the spud challenge is under way, that's me, RK, Shirlton and the Scousers, any other runners, please do not reply with any negativity if you think its too early thats your opinion. Its just a bit of fun with a few under cloches. ;D ;D ;D :P
got ours ready to take with us in the morning..let the games begin ;D
OK. So what is the challenge?
I'm in for the fun of it whatever it is. I planted 8 Vales Green Emerald in the polytunnel yesterday.
First spuds on the table Eristic. :P ;D ;D ;D

First spuds on the table Eristic. :P ;D ;D ;D
.... yes but what size?!! Do they have to be a certain size?
going to put some fleece over the top of the cloche today over mine.
Think we should aim at some the size of a 50 pence piece to count as acceptable.
Planted on 13/02/2009
I'm game but what are the rules? ::)
As Glosterwomble says "Is it size" or total weight of crop per spud planted?
And what is the last planting day to be in the running?
MP
I'll try half a dozen Lady Christie in cold greenhouse border. Just to see if there is any difference :) They will be straight out of bag and not prechitted.
Why not plant six spuds by next weekend and pull them all say 1st June and compare the total weight of crop?
Is anyone going to have a go at spuds in a tub too? ;D
MP
do they have to be in the ground or can we grow them in tubs in a heated greenhouse? (some of the folk on here have got access to heated structures)
I Always plant a few in a coldframe, so I can have new spuds on my birfday (june 7) but if I can use heat, I'll grow some @ college ;)
Too much pressure for me! ;D Will enjoy being a spectator!
Right sorry I just jumped in because RK had planted on the 13th, could be unlucky RK. :( Right they have to be planted on the lottie, garden, tubs, pollytunnel, coldframe or Cold greenhouse or the like, no heat then everyone has a fair chance, the sooner the better I'm aiming for Tommorow covering with large bottle cloches. So we'll see who has the first meal for two on the table, size will be argueable so no smaller than a tabletennis ball but hey its only a bit of fun. ;D ;D ;D
O.K. Kev, I just wanted to clear up the heating issue! down the lottie, in a cold frame, then, Good luck to all entrants, ;) I'm off to plant a few 'rocket' and 'international kidney' ;D ;D
OK I'll clear the snow & give it a go. ;D
MP
Can I join in too? I think I'll try a few Swift and maybe a few Rocket as well. I'll have to cover with fleece as I haven't got cloches or a cold frame yet!
Kitty Katt
there you go, 10 rocket planted today in the poly ;D
may cover with fleece if it gets cold again
6 Lady Christie planted 14/02/2009 .Ne'r mind a chit there wern't even a bump on em ,so dont know how long they wil be striking through :)
4 rocket and 2 international kidney planted in a cold frame

Do they have to be panted out now in the freezing ground, or can I let them chit in a luke warm (3-8 deg C) porch for a couple of weeks ?
I've just come back from the lottie, the grounds very wet so I've turned it over a bit and put two plastic poly clches over the area I'm planting in, I've also emptied out a bit of the plastic toy tub that I had carrots in last year and added some rotted manure and placed some glass on top as a back up, the sun is out here and its quite a pleasant day, tommorow I'm going to plant them. ;D ;D ;D
Planting 6 international kidney this coming week. On the lottie under cloches. o.k.
Our Tones planted 6 rocket today out in the open but under fleece with a polythene cover. Did take the camera today but the battery had run out.
I've just come back from the lottie and I've planted three rocket in a toy tub and three in the ground covered with a plastic tunnel cloche. ;D ;D ;D

Can I join in? If so, would it be all right if I planted mine before the end of this week (may not be possible before Thursday)? I have a few Colleen (First Early) which have started to sprout. If I'm too late, no worries.

And me, got a day off tomorrow so will pop a Rocket in a tub. Will we dig them up on the same day ???
I assume my potato bags planted in October don't qualify? :) They look as if they've been killed by the frosts anyway. :'(
I'll have a go with Annabelle
Anyone can join in, it's just a bit of fun, get them in as soon as you want, you may want to put some plastic down for a few weeks to warm the soil or choose to put them straight in with the aid of cloches, bubblewrap, plastic, fleece or anything you have to try and pit your wits against the weather and remember when they appear protect against the frosts and its the first to have a decent size meal for two on the plate and no Barnowl Oct planting don't count. ;D ;D ;D
Count me in ;D. 10 swift and 5 Dunlace planted in polytunnel yesterday.
Your counted in Jay, any other takers maybe Saddad. ??? ;D ;D ;D
Can we play too, please?
Planted 5 each of Red Robin, Pixie, Princess, Rooster and International Kidney in bags in the cold greenhouse about 2 weeks ago
Weed-Digga (and RosieMcPosie)
Would I be too late to take part if I bought and planted a few in the morning?
can i play as well please?
I'm sure some of mine are 1st earlys
lbb
You lot are on the ball arent you .
still eating last years crop myself, too wet to do anything
over here in south yorkshire.
you must be from darn sarth ;D ;D ;D
Darn sarth indeed, N London, everyone can play and put them in when you want ,you may benefit from later planting, but don't put tooo many in unless you can afford to loose them, no heat just cold frames, buckets, bags, tubs, plastic, bubblewrap etc. Best of British aaand keep on spuding. ;D ;D ;D
I planted three Duke Of York on Sunday.
Just had a thought - I put my pots in the GH on Sunday. Is that OK under the rules?
As long as its not heated. ;D ;D ;D
Kev you haven't yet said when we are gonna dig em up. Or have I missed the post?
Quote from: cornykev on February 25, 2009, 15:28:55

Oops! :-[ It has an anti frost heater - I'll move them out.
I'm late this year - I've normally planted a few earlies by now. But we've got some children coming from the nearby Primary school next week and some of them are going to help me.
Tony - your birthday's on June 7th; mines on the 5th and I always have a crop of potatoes by then. (I normally lift the first root in late May, just to test them!)
Oh well, after that boast I'd better get off to the plot tomorrow and get some in!
I have planted 2 Mimi's and 1 Arran Pilot today in a potato sack and put it in my (very small) rear porch - totally unheated!
mat
Barnowl thats a yellow card, ;) sorry Shirl I didn't give the date, very spooky Trev I was just going to post that we lift them on the weekend of 6/7 of June because its Tony's birthday, so thats a date then and just in case Shirls bad memory kicks in its the first weekend in June. ;D ;D ;D

Same here Trevor! do you eat fresh runner beans for your birthday, as well?
only asking 'cos I repotted a few today into 1ltr pots. ;)
Thankyou for letting me know. You will probably have to remind me a bit nearer the date. ;D
Runner beans?? Are you a warlock or something??
But I always reckon to have 5 or 6 different veg: asparagus (of course, but no skill involved there!), carrots, beetroot, spinach, calabrese, peas, mangetout, French beans (not all of these every year, of course). Still trying to get broad beans, but haven't done it yet.
So that's tomorrow sorted - it's tattie planting!!
Finally got round to planting a few first earlies - Colleen - today in warmed up soil with cardboard on top. Way behind others.
Just put a few more in today, covered them with polythene then fleece on top. 15 were planted a couple of weeks ago and planted around 80 more today.
What do you use for the hoops Richard. They look very smart
Its waterpipe Shirlton from the plumbers merchant it costs about £25 for 50 metres
I planted three more rocket under a cloche today, looking good RK, I have got some of that blue pipe on my lottie, I must get round to using it. ;D ;D ;D
Cheers corny good luck to you in the challenge
Ulster Septre planted in bags at begining of Jan have reached the top of their bags and looking strong. I'm using several layers of fleece on these frosty nights and keeping fingers crossed! Potatoes planted for this challenge are still all safely undercover of soil, I hope! ;D
Am I the only one then who can't dig their sticky clay let alone plant potatoes in it????? :(
no Kea your not alone.. I am desperate to get digging my heavy clay :'(.. frustrating isn't it :( :( :( :( :(
I am hoping to have some ready for the table by the last week if not earlier fingers crossed. ;) ;)
I went and checked them today as I thought the winds may have blown the cloches off but they was OK, I also put a line of rocket in uncovered. ;D ;D ;D

I've also got a hedgehog parked on the end of one bed! So I need some better weather 1) to dry the soil a bit...not too much or it's concrete and 2) so the hedgehog will wake up so i can sort that bed out.
Must make sure i have a suitable hedgehog home for next winter.
Today it has already poured down and the rest of the week doesn't look great but probably just as well because my OH drilled through the wall (where there shouldn't have been electrical cable...fortunately he had that circuit off at the time) and drilled through cable so we've lost a whole electrical circuit with all but one plug in the Kitchen and the washing machine, dishwasher, dryer and gas boiler all out of action. Guess who is going to have to spend valuable allotment time searching and waiting for an electrician! :(
I've been told to play so here I am. ;) 8)
Four Swift planted today in an old compost sack and covered with a cloche.
No idea what I'm doing but I've started a separate thread to record my progress. :)

well sorry to burst your bubble but ive won already ;D thats if im allowed to enter being down here in the south west. I planted my potatoes in wooden boxes 4ft x 4ft and about 2ft high using multi purpose compost, on good friday of last year. because of work and the wet weather never harvested all of them and I just left them and there fine, I also have carrots aswell ;D ;D ;D
No sign of anything above ground yet from the first earlies (Colette) that I planted in the ground in late February. But I have made a fairly high mound over them.
Sorry Chuff but you planted too early nice try though. ;D ;D ;D
All six of our Rocket are up about 4" so have taken the fleece of em and earthed them up. Funny thing is I only remember puttin 5 in.

What dya think of these then
Is that your spuds earthed up Shirl or have you buried Tones slippers again. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :-*

Blimey KK your only 6 weeks and two days early, :o is this a wind up, if not where, when and how did you plant them. ??? ;D ;D ;D
Well if KK's have grown that quickly then mine must be the same. I'm going to look tomorrow.
our plants are big but I wouldn't think of having a firkle yet ;D
Looks good KK, hope they were tasty.
Finally worked out how to do the picture bit, I hope!
Had a bit of a firkle (love that word) Defo spuds underneath, they have really caught up with the ones planted in Jan, which were YUM.
Hi, corney kev. Definitely not a wind up. Bought them before Xmas and had them chitting on top of spare room wardrobe. Planted them about 6 inches deep in raised bed on 14th Feb with soil enriched with well rotted manure and some slow release fertiliser and covered bed with fleece. Once the green was through, pulled back the fleece on mild days and covered them over again when it was cold and at night. Also earthed up to give extra protection from frost. I live in Devon, so it is one of the milder parts of the country!
Kitty Katt
as big as marbles?
;)
Well I had a bit of a firk today but didn't want to mess em about much so left em till The day of reckoning which is ???????
I had a firkle today but like Shirlton didn't want to mess about too much, the day of reckoning is the weekend of Tonyblokes birthday. ;D ;D ;D
It's my Tony's birthday tomorrow. he's 80
Can't compete with Kittykat. Amazing!

I had a little firkle in the gound today when no one was looking, :P I found some newies the size of small eggs, I'll check my tubs tomorrow. ;D ;D ;D
had 10 hen's eggs during the last week, they melt when you eat them, going to 'firkle' tomorrow morning for some to take with us ;D
We planted some swift on April 10th. It's OHs birthday next Thursday. It would be lovely if after all the hard work he has put in he could enjoy the fruits of his labours. Some of them are getting flowers on & we have fleece on them for a few weeks. Do you think it's worth a FIRCLE. I love that word.
Janet
Strange thing ere, me mains seem to have popped up the green leaf no problem. My earlies sem to be struggling..any ideas? all were chitted at the same time and earlies weent out 3 weeks before mains and lates..
They vary a lot. My Duke of York and Cara are coming up strongly while Arran Pilot, Charlotte and PFA are barely showing.
My ones in the ground have just got their flowers, I was going to firkle the ones in the toy tub today but it was so windy today I gave it a miss, maybe tomorrow. ;D ;D ;D
When are we due to dig them up?
My Colette, which I planted in the open ground at the end of February, started flowering a few days ago. I firkled a plump one for my friend's grandson when he visited on Wednesday and she said he enjoyed eating it for his dinner. I'm away for a week now and hope to dig some up on return.
(http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s121/shirlton/enviromeshcages018.jpg)Had a firkle today and ureka
Well the big dig up date was the weekend of Trevor D and Tony Blokes birthday 5/7 of June but if I leave some of them for another two weeks I think some of them will get too big for new spuds so I'm going to dig some up on Monday because the outlaws are staying so I thought I'd dig some up for our dinner. :o ??? ;D ;D ;D
a couple of ours today were more like bakers, they're growing like mad ;D
Thats what I mean Manics by the time I start to get through them they'll be bakers. ;D ;D ;D
still taste good though ;D
Having grown rocket for the first time, I don't think we will grow them again.I prefer the pentland javelin. Would like to try lady crystl
Whats the matter with Rocket Shirl, I have both Rocket and Lady Chrstyl in. ??? :-\ ??? ;D ;D ;D

are you hinting that Kev ain't got any taste? :) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Talking of taste, I pulled some newies out of the ground and toy tub and had enough for a meal for four, melted butter and mint sauce on them, they melted in my mouth, and it was thumbs up from the outlaws to, guess what we're aving for din dins tomorrow. PS OH steamed them before I could get home and take a piccy. :P :P :P ;D ;D ;D

Been so busy at the plot, I'd lost track of this thread....
My Lady C didn't actually go in until March 1st - latest ever! But I picked the first lot last week (May 20th) just one plant did the pair of us a meal. Second lot the day after, but they were a bit smaller, so I left them for a few days. Picked another lot yesterday.
Sorry, no pictures. Must pay Dan some more money.
(Also picking carrots from a tub in the GH, lettuce from the GH, over-wintered broad beans, asparagus and globe artichokes!)
I harvested another meal for four today and had a few over , I'l get a piccie of the few overs. ;D ;D ;D
Dug my first spuds on Wednesday just gone will dig some more tomorrow and put pics on.
By the way the ones that i am digging were planted on March 15th......the ones planted out on Feb 13th are at least two weeks behind proves to me that you can not plant out to early and have to wait for the ground to warm up naturally and for longer day length. ( I think ) :-\ :-\
My last lot are just about to be devoured. We are going to do the same next year but with Pentland Javelin under fleece and cloches. We think that it has been well worth the effort putting them in a month early. Sorry we couldn't wait for yer birfday Tone
I harvested 'Swift' from my compost sack today. I'll post the full story in my thread about growing Potatoes in containers. Plant label is 12cm long.

I furkled and snared a few today for dinner today, looking good both of you. ;D ;D ;D
dug up the first first earlies today, after having 6 meals off them, found these strange little things, not near the top of the soil, not gone green ;D
second bed, first of the rooster, little and large ;D
Looking good Manics, I harvested enough for a meal tonight and watered the plant back in the ground. ;D ;D ;D
Can't wait for the march planted earlies.Hate having to buy spuds
Have a firkle Shirl. ;D ;D ;D
What kind of yields are you guys getting from 1st earlies? I had a firkle (been waiting a while to use that word ;D ) and mine, planted mid March have maybe 4 or so spuds on them at the mo. I know from my diary that I should be able to start digging them from mid June (a bit later than some of you guys), but was a bit disappointed with what I found. Is a lower yield (compared to mains etc)normal for 1st earlies?
Thanks

Bit stupid, but why are folk lifting earlies for storing??
No Tim we only put a few seed potatoes in on valentines day just to see what the harvest would be like. Mine were eaten a few weeks ago.

Plan to empty a pot out tonight. Just had two 10" pots with one seed potato in each (not allowed to count last October's planters with Anya and Vivaldi in them).
Taken in late April

Good question Tim unfortunately i don,t know the answer
Mine stay in the ground till needed.
I only lift earlies as needed.
My yields so far, based on a single plant of each from the end of the row:
Riviera: 2lb 6oz/plant
Mimi: 2lb 2oz/plant
Dunbar Rover: 2lb 8oz/plant
No idea if that's good or bad. All my potato plants are huge, a good 3' tall, and the foliage reaching right over to the next row, many of my neighbours plants are under a foot. Not sure why.
I am going to stop reading the potato posts cos the green eyed monster is coming out of me. I am a couple of weeks behind growers south of me, still the bright side is i will be digging up my earlies when you have moved onto the seconed earlies.

Dunbar Rover is a second early, couldn't resist lifting one, but I'll be leaving the rest for a while.
No storing here Tim, ??? just dig them up as I need them, I've been eating them since the 25th May, :P if I was visiting your neck of the woods Davey I'd bring you up a few. ;D ;D ;D

OR NOW HERE, There is no need for this try putting the salt on your taties and not my wounds
I have just got flowers on now.
Nor here Tim ! I've been digging up Swift earlies as I need them for the past few weeks, with enough still in the ground to see me though to the end of the month I reckon.
Well here they are: one rather neglected seed potato in a 10" (about 11 litre) pot produced this.

Not sure if that's a good result or bad...suspect it's a "could try harder" :)
I emptied one of my toy tubs over the lottie and was very disappointed with the result. :( :( :( ;D ;D ;D

well I guess it's got to be better than throwing your toys / spuds out of your pram ;D ;D ;D
Oi, keep on and I'll Mash the pair of you. ;) ;D ;D ;D
I lifted one plant of winston and got 4.6lbs of spuds.
The container held one potato that was left with just 2 eyes on it and held 17litres of compost.
Ower Tone dug up 2 roots of rocket and got over 8lb and they were a good size too. I want to finish the rocket so that I can start eating the Pentland Javelin
I keep digging the Rocket but keep forgetting to weigh them, mind you every plant I dig are bigger than the last, the ones I had Sunday melted in my mouth. :P :P :P ;D ;D ;D
