I've got a pot planted acer (red leaves not sure of variety :-\) that's pretty pot bound so I need to re-pot into something bigger asap, what would be the best growing medium for it? (eraceous compost?). Any other tips most welcome.

go for a John Innes No3, ericaceous. ;)
