Title: What size crop?
Post by: grannyjanny on February 10, 2009, 20:09:35
As I have bought the Lidl fruit trees OH thinks we will now only have room for 2 rows of Autumn raspberries. Approx 12 canes per row. How big a crop do you think we could get from them. OH feels we should only have 2 rows because of the roots from the cordon grown apples & pears. Will they make large roots grown as cordons? They will be planted north to south, the other option is on a north facing boundary. Would that be any good? Thanks.
Janet.

Last year I grew Autumn raspberries for the first time and from a row 8 feet (2.4M) long had 2 Kg.

From a 2 year old row of summer fruiting ones I had 6 Kg.

I expect that this year I shall have approaching 7-8 Kg per row.

That is a lot of raspberries and I still have jam and frozen ones to prove it!

If you think that it is easy to consume that amount of fruit, then if you add

30Kg of strawberries, gooseberries and blackcurrants, then it is a lot.

24 canes of Autumn Raspberries will be fine... enough for a picking for 4 every two or three days from August to the frosts... They breed in the soil!! The Raspberries won't mind the north border but will be a week or two later than in the sunny side...

About 18" apart would be normal so about half a dozen to an eight foot row..

We started off with three rows of 12, Glen Magna, Joan J and Tulameen.  We've given away loads of suckers, especially the Joan J, we have raspberries coming out of our ears and we almost have to pay friends to come and help themselves.

Thanks everyone. It looks as though 2 rows will be enough.
