Title: Sweet potato
Post by: grannyjanny on February 08, 2009, 19:32:23
I've bought my organic S/P & just got one out to sprout it. The one I have chosen, the largest I have noticed that the round end has a white root on it. Is this OK & it is the pointed end I should have in the water isn't it.

It's def the end with white roots you want in the water, pointy or not...  :-\

Thanks again. Where would we be without you experts. I've cut a water bottle in two & put the top in the bottom if you see what I mean, & there is a tiny amount of water where I have put the root end. Can't find the cocktail sticks so is this OK.
Thanks,
Janet.

My sweet potatoes have started to chit now!!  ;D ;D ;D How exciting! When the shoots develop do I cut them with a sharp knive and then put them in water to root or do I plant them straight into compost?

Better to just rub the shoot off with a finger. That way you will often take some roots with you. Plant straight into a pot with or without roots. Keep in good light.

I have learnt from last year,  first attempt to grow sweet potatoes.
My tubers have been in water for 3 weeks and I will plant them on when only half an inch high to get a longer growing season.

phtographs on :-
