Title: Pear pollination.
Post by: grannyjanny on February 07, 2009, 16:26:38
Does anyone know which pear I could use to pollinate a Beurre Hardy pear. I've had a look on fruit tree site but have never heard of them. I would like to get one tomorrow from Lidl's so if anyone knows I would be grateful.
Janet.

Beurre Hardy is a group B so Beth, Conference, Williams Bon Chretien and Jargonelle are OK, Jargonelle is a triploid though so would need a third to get fruit of it as well.

Thanks SD. You are a star. Just hope they've got some left.

A triploid has no pollen, so the Beurre Hardy would pollinate it, and the third tree would be needed to pollinate that.

I've probably dropped a complete clanger. They didn't have any Conference Pears, they had Comice so I got one of those to go with the Beurre Hardy. Am I a dropper of clangers?

You'll probably get away with it... there are likely to be conference in the area, Comice is a group C and may still overlap with flowering...  :)

Gosh that was quick. Thank-you. I think I will get DG Hessayon. Seen it on Amazon new & used for about 60p + P&P.

Trees in adjacent groups do overlap so you should be OK, and Comice will follow on nicely.
