Title: Insiders and outsiders......
Post by: Ninnyscrops. on February 06, 2009, 20:57:38
Watching a prog on the telly about Croydon being in South London...........nooooooooo it's not, it's in Surrey.

In my humble London upbringings you were considered a Londoner if you lived in these postal codes E, EC, N, NW, SE, SW, W and WC.

Not wanting to offend anyone here that considers themselves a Londoner (born and bred for 19 years in London, it was pronounced CLAP HAM in my days, and the last 30 odd years in Sussex) - does anyone else live in an area that peeps creep on the boundary of so they can say they live there?

Ninnyscrops - having a vent  ;D ;D ;D

PS - please don't shout at me about Greater London on wiki - did have a look first  ;D

Well, I live in London - the London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames.  My postcode is TW and according to the Post Office I live in Middlesex, which no longer exists except to the Post Office!

......and Richmond upon Thames used to be in Surrey  ;D

The Post Office only use post towns and postal codes now (with a few exception like Ashford, Surrey and Ashford, Middlesex) so it's their fault all our old counties are disappearing  >:(

Post Codes were designed for internal use in the Post Office, it was never intended that other companies should use them for their own purposes. I belong to a National Club which tries to arrange its local groups on post codes, it's a complete mess. The only information necessary to get a letter delivered correctly is:- Name, Number, Road/Street, and Post Code.

That's great for a local delivery Larkshall - even though you have got rid of the towns too  ;D

My original gripe was about encroaching boundaries on city names  ???

Has anyone lost their sense of belonging to an old county too???

On a more local scale I live in Normanton (Derby) but on Littleover Lane... which most people claim to be in Littleover (Semi-detached suburbia) not Normanton (Victorian Terraces)... despite the fact that the Boundary post is very clear where the lane changes to Normanton Lane, Littleover...  ::)

It's been a topic of debate between myself and others about exactly where Croydon lies on the map.  Is it a London borough, is it not?  The majority feel it is but as you say, it's actually in Surrey!  There are a few places on the outskirts of London which are classed as being in London also.  I do know that when I have to apply for police response numbers (alarm & cctv) for properties in Croydon, it has to be done through the Metropolitan Police - but then so do a lot of areas in Kent!  My own opinion is if it has Surrey on the end, then it's Surrey not London but I don't know the official answer! ;D

and LOL @ Froglegs!  ;D
