Just wondering which varity of peppers you've had success with?
Which variety are you planning on growing this year?
Last year I grew California Wonder :-\. Yes they were a great taste but no bigger than ping pong balls ::)
I would like to grow a different variety that will be something of the size you get in the grocers ;)
Lauren :)
long red marconi, california wonder, mixed sweet peppers from asda, dear but had black ones in :o
hot wax picked green and yellow so not hot at all ;D
we did really well last year, don't know why ???
Worldbeater, California Wonder, Marconi and a pale one called Sarek from HSL.
;D
Oh I didn't think about using shop bought ones for their seeds.
Thanks for the tip Manics...Every little helps ::)
GYPSY, VERY RELIABLE AND TAKES A COOLER TEMP. i WILL STAND BY THIS ONE,,SUPER SUPER PEPPER xx jEANNINE
I had Sweet California Wonder last year and I got a bumper crop of ginormous peppers - bigger than shop-bought ones. No idea why, they were pretty runty little plants under a foot tall and just got a tomato feed. Maybe they liked the toxic manure........... ?
I second Jeannine on Gypsy. Very reliable and lovely flavour. Also Jumbo and Corno di Toro Rosso are very good. I can let you have a few seeds of Gypsy and Corno di Toro Rosso - have just found that I don't have any Jumbo seeds left, so if anyone has a couple to spare I'd be grateful. They grow huge in my small GH.
Tricia
I have only grown Californian Wonder once but had great yields and sized fruits. Gypsy peppers I grew for the first time last year. There were loads and they were huge.
Last year, Habanero, Jalopena, meek & mild, Padron. The jalapenos were frozen, habeneros made into hot Bajan sauce, and the Padrons dried. Meek and mild were just that ... meek & mild.
This year we have loads so will grow a couple or so of each and see what happens:
Bhut Jolokia
Tokyo Hot
Joe's Long
Habanero Peach
Hot Stuff
Apache
Demon Red
Padron
Bulgarian Lady
Anaheim
Habanero Orange
Tropical Heat
Prairie Fire
Tabasco
Inferno F1
Hot Thai
Stromboli
Cayenne
Fuego
Last year I grew Worldbeater, Golden Bell and Gourmet sweet peppers and De Cayenne chilli pepper. The Worldbeater were a very good size with the others about tennis ball size. The De Cayenne were lovely and hot and an excellent crop, still got loads in the freezer. This year I am growing them all again but adding Tepin chilli pepper and Fenix and Romano sweet peppers. Hope we get some sun to ripen them.
I grew Californian Wonder 4 year ago and they were really poor so i did'nt bother again. Glad i've seen this thread going to try Gypsy.
Can vouch for Gypsy F1 which I think I bought on the suggestion of Tim. Also tried dwarf Marconi Patio (spare trial seed). Previously Toreador and Rosso di Nocera have been good.
This year, amongst others, I'll be trying Kaibi Round and the hugely expensive Atris F1. (NB Do not buy Atris from T&M except as your free packet, nor as a Duchy original; Kings and Tuckers are cheaper).
The only one I've grown before and definitely wouldn't grow again is Redskin which I found disappointing.

Oh my my, thanks for all your ideas, wonderful.
Are some of you starting your own chilli/pepper farms ;D
You're growing soooooooooo many varieties :o
Hi
I see that Deb P has "Big Banana" down,
I was looking at that one in the T&M catalogue but it says not to allow exposure to temps below 12deg C.
I am sure that my poly tunnel goes below that at night (and for that matter on some summer days!).
Do you heat yours? or is that only a recommendation that can be ignored?
thanks
Bill
hiya, bappelbe, welcome to the site ;D
what sort do you grow ?
My chilli list is far too long, if you are talking sweet peppers my favorite is lipstick, thick walls, wonderful taste, early, heavy yields, best for over wintering, can't beat it
Sorry! senior moment! that wasn't the question! will get the list ready ::)
Biscombe, great to see you, are you better now?
cant wait to see your list
lbb
Yep thanks LBB good to see you too :-*
Welcome to the site Bappelbe...
I know DebP's greenhouse isn't heated so I think it is a recommendation to be taken with a pinch of salt... :-X
Neither my home greenhouse or the little lottie one is heated, I use fleece over small pepper plants until May then they all take their chances! I've had good crops from Big Banana in the past so perhaps they are tougher than they are thought to be..?
I also grow my peppers on gravel topped staging and put gravel on the top of the pots, I find this acts as a 'heat sink' and keeps them cosier at night, and protects the rootball a bit more in the summer.

Last year I picked up one type of sweet pepper in a garden centre (not sure which type)
and I grew Cheyenne and Cayenne chillis.
This year I plan to grow Gypsy Hungarian hot wax and Super Chilli.
I had discounted the Big Banana because of the warning not to expose to temps of less than 12C, might try it now.
thanks
Bill
This year, growing Marconi Rosso. In a previous year, did really well with a yellow pepper - Oro.
Chillis - done well with Rocoto ones from RealSeeds, also HSL's Trifetti. Last year wasn't the best of years but Friar's Hat did well.
