Title: What shall i use them for???
Post by: mummybunny on February 04, 2009, 16:54:56
I have been given a huge bag of various pots alot of them i'll use for seedlings but theres a few that i thought i could put to better use.

They are 5 inchs wide and 7 inchs deep any ideas??

Thought possibly i could use them to grow sweetcorn 1 per pot? Then bunch them all together in a sunny patch?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Lucy

I don't think you'd have much success with sweetcorn in that sized pots, for a start you would be forever picking them up after they had blown over, if sweetcorn had to be grown in pots then I think youd need at least a bucket size.

You could use them for patio veg such as lettuce, spring onion but even then you'd be forever watering.  I've got a stack of a couple of hundred of that sized pot and I dont know what to do with them either  ;D

Are they big enough for bush corgettes?

I was planning on immersing the pots  into a area in the garden that is extremely stoney, not suitable for planting straight into the ground so they wouldn't fall over. Just wasn't sure if the pots would be large enough for even 1 stalk of sweetcorn?

I could use them for lettuce and spring onions as i am planning on growing  ;D

Im not really a fan of corgettes well i say that but not tried them in years so might be worth another try!

Thanks

You could remove the bottoms of some of the pots and use them to effectively increase the amount of soil that the plants would have access to, this then might be large enough for a sweetcorn plant though I still doubt it - sweetcorn roots tend to anchor at the surface for a good 8 inches or so radius.

Too small for squashes and courgettes I would have thought, dwarf beans would be OK.

Chillies should be ok, particularly the shorter and dwarf varieties, but I suppose there are only so many of those you'd want to grow.  Lovage, chives,  and garlic chives are useful (Lovage would like a larger pot but will be ok for a season).

Some mini cauliflowers (eg Igloo / snowball) and cabbages (eg Protovoy / Puma / Minicole) are planted only 6 inches apart so those might be ok.

As RBT said you'd have to keep them watered - perhaps invest in a dripper system :)
