Does anyone have a problem with peat pots? You buy them stacked up one inside each other but trying to separate them ends up with my tearing or breaking them up. What am I doing wrong? Is there a technique? ???

I find they are easier to separate from the top of the stack, a gentle twist normally does it.
I know exactly what you mean - I always seem to have a battle with them. Then once I've managed to get them out, watered, compost and seeds in etc I always seem to struggle to keep them from drying out too much. So I'm using up the ones left over from last year and don't think I'll bother with them again which means I'll just have to eat more takeaways and yoghurt to get "free" seed trays and pots ;D
Perhaps bring them into the warm for a while, might make them less brittle.

You can always use plastic trays from meat produce, or (blueberry) fruit punnets which have their own propagator lids ;).
I save/use the white trays as they don't seem to buckle and bend when full of compost and seeds ::)
