Title: Last years left over potatoes are starting to chit
Post by: beckydore on January 31, 2009, 19:43:43
.... can I use them on the plot this year?

I've just been out to check the potatoes and noticed that the remaining first and second earlies from last year are starting to chit. Would it be a really bad idea to use them or is this what I would be buying if I get seed potatoes from the nursery anyway?

You can plant them, if that's what you meant by "use",  but really shouldn't for risk of carrying diseases forward. I'd rub the chits off and eat them.. we spent a couple of hours checking our sacks for bad spuds and removing chits last week!  :)

I forgot to use first earlies and they are chitting, but they are perfectly good to eat once the chits are rubbed off. Some of them are a little soft and tired, so I mash them with parsnip and leeks, and they are delicious.
