Title: Compost. Recommendations please.
Post by: grannyjanny on January 25, 2009, 19:05:51
I went to buy some compost last week & was amazed how much it had gone up. I have used J Arthur Bowers in the past without problems. It was £4.99 but the size has gone down to 60ltrs. What do other recommend please.

unfortunately, we buy in bulk from a comany called J Maher, in Bolton, under 3.00 per bag +v.a.t.
I have his e mail if you would like to ask for a catalogue, he supplies lots of allotments  :)

That's very kind of you MS but there isn't any storage so I think we are expected to get our own. Out of interest what is the smallest amount they deliver.

Focus did Buy 3 get one free last week but don't know if the offer still stands. I think it was £3.99 a bag (plus 10% off for the over sixties if you've got a card for this). With the 10% discount this works out at about £2.40 a bag. I think the bag size was 60 ltr.

Happy shopping!

he delivers any amount but under 50.00, I think, there is a delivery charge.
I like this compost as it can be traced back to the source so there is not supposed to be any nasties in it  :)

just found the order, 70ltr for 2.07 +15% v.a.t, he's in Great Lever, that's the price for 20 bags but our total order is over 200.00 as we've ordered 40 hanging baskets for the plant sale , so no delivery charge on the invoice  ;D

The compost centre is really good, friendly delivery drivers can deliver to your allotment and help you offload.  I bought 10 bags off them 80L for £2.50 a bag, that filled 3 beds.  The price goes down to £2.35 if you buy 50 bags +

They cover the surrey area and more so have look on their website.  And they supply RHS Wisley and you can trace their manure too

Thanks everyone for your help. MS I phoned Mayhers today. They are sending me a catalogue so I can take it to the lotty. The good thing is they only charge £4 delivery for smaller orders. It's £2.15 +vat for 5-39 bags so it would work out cheaper than what I am paying now.

yes, granny..
been transplanting carnations and bacopa cuttings this week, also sowed some onions and flower seeds, I'm amazed, didn't have any vermiculite and the livingstone daisies and other very small seeds have appeared already (7 days).
sweet peas just coming through so the compost seems very good  :)
