Title: Family History
Post by: Paulines7 on January 21, 2009, 21:50:03
My other hobby as well as growing things, is researching my family tree.

I have just joined Find My Past and paid a years subscription but unfortunately they don't have the full 1851 Census on there.  I believe the Ancestry site has the full census and am wondering if there is anyone on here that has a subscription to it and could look up a few names for me please.

I would like to add that I would be happy to look anything up on Find My Past for any members of this site that are researching their trees.

Pauline, I really think you need to be careful out there.  Searching one's past is one o the biggest growth 'industries'.  There are a lot of cowboys out there.

Go to your local council.  Or join your local society.  Be careful, you can spend a lot of money for nothing.

Valmarg, I disagree with everything you have written in your post.

I started my family tree research in the 1960's by asking questions of those relatives still alive then.  I took it up again seriously when I graduated in 1998 and I have never come across any cowboys!!

The local council would not be of any help to me as my ancestors are from all over Great Britain, though I did use the IGI London records in the local library before I used a computer for the research.  A local society is not the way to go either.

I have been very successful so far.  I have visited the Records Office and Metropolitan Archives in London but now find it so much easier to do everything on line.

Yes, it is expensive as Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates sometimes have to be purchased, but they contain a wealth of information.

I have learnt so much about my roots and that of my husband's; it is such an interesting hobby and I will have a dossier to pass down to my grandchildren.

I have met some lovely people too, mainly through Genes Reunited.  Our common ancestors sometimes go back four or five generations.  I sent some old photos by email to someone I had met through GR as I didn't know who the people were in the pictures.  One of them was the person I had sent it to!! It was her as a child with her mother!

Occupations of my ancestors include Undertakers, Fishermen, Painters and Decorator, Cordwainer, glassblower, Labourers, Lathrenderer, Headmaster, Headmistress, Farmer, Factory Hand, Watchmaker........the list goes on.  Now where were those cowboys?   ;D ;D

I have also found some French blood through a Huguenot, but have not yet found the Welsh connection on the Jenkins and Williams lines.

If anyone is thinking of starting family research, send me a pm and I will give you some useful advice on how to start and the internet addresses of essential sites.

Meanwhile, if there are any peeps who do have access to the 1851 Census, I would love to hear from you please.   :D

Pauline,  I have PM'd you.

Valmarg, there are so many free websites out there now that anyone can search their family tree for no more expense than coming on here and some very knowledgable forums too.  It is the most amazing and fascinating hobby and tops and tails perfectly with gardening as you can do it when you can't get outside!  I have learnt so much about social history.  And Indian military history too! ::)

I agree with Tulipa, but of the sites you have to pay for, Find My Past has always seemed the best to me, especially now it also has the 1911 census as well.

And although they don't have the complete 1851 census, they are planning to complete it within the next few months, so hang on and you'll get there.

I agree with everything Pauline has said.  Family History kept me busy for many years after I gave up work and couldn't find work.  I started in 1987 before my Gran died aged 97yrs so was able to pass on info. to her about her Grt Grandparents before she died.  I became Secretary of the Borders F.H.S. for 12 years and through the Society I have made many friends.   I was also co-ordinator for this area for the transcribing of the 1881 Census.  My current project is recording headstones and taking pics of each one so that it will be of use to other Family History members for this area.  I found it more satisfying to visit the Records Office and local records office to find my information but the Internet is handy for those who cannot gather their information locally.  Good luck in finding the 1851 census Pauline.  I have also PMd you.

Thank you all very much for your offers of help.  I was surprised as to how many of you are researching your trees for I have had pm's as well as the replies on here.

One pm was from someone who is stuck with his research so hopefully I may be able to help him as well as receiving offers of help from people on here regarding my ancestors in the 1851 Census.

Thanks again folks!

I was paid up to Ancestry.com but took out a new one with Find my Past just this month.
Yes, there are quite a few freeby sites out there now. If anyone has good experiences of some, lets be knowing.
(The 1891 census has my G'father down as being a girl! The 1901 census has my G'mother down as being a boy! Heck, did I have some sorting with those two!)

It always pays to check with the actual document if you can, rather than the transcription. I've found quite a few mistakes, including one today in the new 1911 census. (My grandmother was given her maiden name, not her married name as it quite clearly states on the original; the head of the household was her father, and the transcriber obviously just copied the same surname!)

Yes there are lots of mistakes but sometimes the handwriting is really hard to read because of the differences in style compared to modern writing. My Great grandfather's name was Augustine and someone who transcribed it thought he was a girl in the 1841 census. i had a subscription to Ancestry last year but you can buy short term search times that make it a bit cheaper but you'd be best to save up a few searches to do to get your money's worth. I had an 180 day sub which came with my Family treemaker program and I wasted most of it as our computer wasn't working for a month during it and several holidays took out another month and i had a mad scramble at the end trying to do as much as possible. When you do this you seem to travel back into the past into another world. One my surnames is Ferry and it's a pain in the neck to search for as you get links to every Ferry service in the world! Another is Guery and the computer kept insisting it should be Query!
