Sidling in after a long, long absence and am so chuffed to see so many happily-remembered A4A names.
So I just wanted to say (most belatedly) "happy new year" and will try to catch up again with things here as best I can.

Secret mission? I wish...
Just spent much of 2008 feeling like I was swimming against a 2-knot tide: not so much two steps forward and one step back, more the other way around. ::) Just keeping my head out of the mire (moneywise particularly - same as everyone) seemed to take all my time last year.
Good news first: the kids are both fine (sprouting like ... well, like triffids ;)) and the bees did better than I dared hope, given that they pretty much had to fly between raindrops right through last summer. Out of the seven colonies I began 2008 with, five survived to start this winter. Fingers crossed that they pull through till spring.

However, I pretty much abandoned my poor lottie from late summer: for the first time ever (and I never dreamed I'd say this) I found being there depressing. Between the weather, shed vandals and a plague of slugs, there wasn't much to harvest.
So I'm more or less starting again from scratch (empty plots either side of mine mean the couch grass/bindweed tangle has got nearly back to where it was six years ago when I started.) You can probably understand why I hid away under my rock last year - I was scuffling my feet in embarrassment. :-[
Anyway, courage in both hands etc and onward into the new year. :)

Rotten year then? No wonder you hid away. New Year new start :D

Lets hope you get into lottie mode with renewed vigour, best of luck. We're gunna be here as always ;D ;D
