Title: Crocosmia
Post by: Georgie on January 18, 2009, 21:29:55
Does anyone know if these like to be a bit pot bound or would they benefit from being moved into a slightly larger pot.  I ask because I noticed today that mine is beginning to shoot again but many of the shoots are around the edge of the 12" pot.  Thanks.

I don't have any in pots but in the ground they seem to spread outwards and leave the middle of the plant empty after a bit so I dig them up, split them and put them back again. I imagine the same would be true in a pot.

I don't eat them though!!! ;D :o ;D ;D

They benefit from being divided so I guess that means they like a bit of space??

They are like many other perennials that get a 'hole' in the middle of the clump where the outer edges spread out

Most will flower better if crowded... it's their nature...  :-\

Many plnats flower better when slightly stressed eg pot bound. They grow better to fill the space but are under no pressure to flower..  :-\

See what you mean!!  I grow them in clumps or drifts, close together like Saddad says, but when gaps appear in the clumps like what I described I dig them up, split them into individual roots/corms/whatever and replant them to fill the gaps.Does that make more sense ?;)

I suppose this should really be on the non-edible thread.

We have Crocosmia Rufus and another variety, cant remember the name.

Then there is the old plant that used to be called montbretia.  Complete total absolute and utter thug. ;D

Oh! so that's why the tree rats eat tulip bulbs but leave the daffodils well alone.
