Title: moving garlic?
Post by: HappyCatz on January 18, 2009, 16:42:41
Have been told today that will not be able to have my two allotments this year as they are earmarked for a low cost housing scheme :'( To be fair I did know this when I took them on three years ago but did expect to have more notice than this.  Have been offered a half plot on the remaining site so have lots of work to do moving my fruit but luckily I hadn't got too much preparation for the growing year done.  However, I did put my garlic in in november and they are growing away lovely so my question is what to with them now?  I bought the bulbs from the garlic farm so they were too expensive to give up on them.  Any ideas welcome :)

Well, leaving them where they are is not an option, but moving them will need to be done very carefully.

I would suggest digging them up, with as big a soil ball around them, disturbing the root system as little as possible, and potting them individually into large pots.
They won't mind being left out to be frosted.

I have every sympathy with you HappyCats.  Our local garden club was shut down nearly three years ago 'to make way for affordable housing'.  Nothing has been built on the site, and we have been robbed of our gardening club. :'( :'( >:( >:(

If only you could find a few rare Desmoulin's Whorl Snails (Vertigo moulinsiana) on your site. ;)

That would delay any building work for a while, whilst the Environment Agency rehomed them, and by then your Garlic would be  ready for pulling.

The discovery of these delayed the Newbury Bypass for over a year.

Let's face it when they do build the houses no ones going to buy any in this day and age.

What was that ? you think you might have spotted one of these last week ?  ;D

Move it carefully, and it'll be OK. It's got lots of time to settle in. You could plant new now, for that matter, and still get a decent crop. Your plants have roots already, so they'll be fine.

Thanks for your advice everyone, will probably try and put them in pots since there is lots of work to do on the new 1/2 plot I have been given.  They haven't even got planning position yet but apparantly council funds are available for this project and they want to purchase in this financial year.  Probably nothing will happen for ages but have been told that I cannot lease the plots this year and don't want to leave everything in to find that I go there one day and it is fenced off or something.
BTW the slow worms are my secret weapon ;)
