Title: Pepino seeds
Post by: tricia on January 16, 2009, 21:48:43
Could anyone let me have two or three pepino seeds please? I've been reading about them and would like to try to grow them this year.

I have a large assortment of seeds - just tell me what you would like in return.

Hi Trica, I have some pepino seeds going spare, more than happy to send some on.

I grew a couple of plants last year in large pots, which I was pleased with, although the fruit was slow to ripen. They were grown outside during the summer. Late autumn I brought one plant into a frost free GH, fruit has continued to ripen although the plant has dropped some leaves.

Hope this may be of help. Not looking for anything in return.

Thanks for the welcome trica, guess my understanding of pm's is a little basic but hopefully you should have received one now!

Hi louttie lou, the fruit itself is very pretty and the flesh is a light creamy orange color. To me they taste like melon, not the really fragrant type, but still very sweet and juicy. Flesh is smooth and its easy to scoop out with a spoon to eat, the skin is quite thin - so not much waste. I am not sure where the pear bit comes in though. The fruits seem to stay on the plant for ages and I still have about 5 left so its lovely to be able to pick fresh fruit in January.

If you send me a pm with your address I'll post some seeds off to you. No need to send anything as I am just trying to sort out my seeds, they seem to multiply when I'm not looking!

hiya, Jayb, welcome to the site  ;D
are pepino the same things as solanum, or melon pears, mine failed to ripen as august was so wet last year, here's hoping for a warm, sunny summer  ;D

Yes one and the same  ;D

My first year growing them, I almost gave up on them, ripened much later than suggested July-October.

I love summer and if it is a good one, pure joy!

Thanks for the seeds Jayb - arrived this morning. I'll post germination results as I plan on sowing the seeds at the end of the month.

thank you for the seeds Jayb.  I'll let you know how I get on with them.  Dying to know if it is that strange fruit I ate once when abroad.  Will probably start them at the end of next month.
